Very First Rig

Recommended Posts

Hey,

So the topic title pretty much says it all. I'm looking to buy (or assemble) a used rig. I'm hoping someone here will offer me a used Master Series rig for a good price, but at this point I'm open to all offers. Also, if anyone has a used vest for a very small person (about 130 pounds, 5'6"), I would be your ideal size customer.

Katie,

Welcome to the forum and to Steadicam.

Please change your user name to your full real name (assuming Cat is not your last name).

I see you are in NYC. Not a lot of women Steadicam Operators in our neck of the woods. If you need anything , please feel free to contact me. While it is good that you are open minded about gear, I'd recommend getting to know various systems a bit before you buy so that you are happy with all your decisions down the road. Have you taken the workshop?

Best,

Thank you so much for your encouragement, Alec. You're right, I haven't met any female steadicam ops in NY. I was considering booking myself for the upcoming SOA workshop in May, but a friend of mine who took the program said I would benefit more from it if I already had a rig, so I could ask questions, learn and practice using what I already have. Do you agree or do you think it doesn't make a difference? For now I am doing my research online and on set if its a steadicam day. (if you haven't guessed yet, I'm an AC). A few of the steadicam ops I've worked with have been so kind as to let me try their rig on during down time. I may have a feature coming up with quite a few steadicam days, I hope that comes through...

P.S. Cathrine is my middle name, but I did notice that you guys go by first and last name around here... will fix right away.

Katie,

I'd recommend trying various model rigs and getting in a few practice sessions with them. Then take the workshop. Then take your time to assemble/find a rig that you think may make you happy for at least a few years (buy used).

Looked you up on IMBD. I didn't get to see "Half Nelson," but I did a day of Steadi for Andrij on a film recently. Also saw "Never Forever" at Sundance.

Email me through my we site (or the forum) and I'll put you in touch with a few ops here in the city who have various rigs (Master, PRO 1, PRO 2, XCS, etc.). Don't think anyone here in the city has an Ultra 2 yet, but I'm sure you'll see one at the workshop. Besides, don't worry about new gear at this point.

Cheers,

Welcome Katie,

How Long do you think you have until this feature, and do you have any infomation about it ?

You have come to the right place for advice and i'm sure you will get addicted (if not already) just like the rest of us here.

It's greate to have a female voice around here for a change.

Katie!!!

Dunno if that was me who told you this, but you would benefit from having a rig of your own like I did when I did the workshop. But don't let not having a rig be a dealbreaker. Chances are whatever you have will not compare to the new toys there. It just helps you develop a more intimate relationship with the rig you'll be using in the field as it becomes your familiar. It made me not feel as bad seeing the new Master, Clipper and Vector rigs twisting around my bad ass 3/3A.

The workshop alone is an amazing tool to have in your arsenal. You benefit even more when you show up at some dude's house at 3 in the afternoon and stay till 1 the next morning talking about what every cable and button does on your "new" rig the day b/4 your next job. And thank you again, Alec, for that (along with killer martinis).

You have my number. If not, you can find me and others here. Shoot me a PM... See you on the next

ONE,

David

P.S. I dug this one of you from my ish. Good form! BTW Alec, that just goes to show you even skinny people can fit into my thick and rugged vest. Or maybe I'm actually too big for it???
