Premium Members Erik Brul Posted April 7, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 Hi all, It starting to get really anoying to see all the spam messages. Is there something the moderators can do about this ? Maybe a member checkup via ip adresses or something like that ? Just a idea.. best, Erik
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted April 7, 2007 Moderators Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 Erik, Trust me, I share your pain. I spend more time deleting Spam now than I do posting because there are only so many hours in a day. While I know there are those who don't want moderators to post, I know the vast majority would like to hear from us! Spam is a HUGE problem. As of now, the Moderators are helpless to stop it. All we can do is erase it. I have asked Tim to put in a member filter of some sort to verify a person is real (there are a number of them out there). I know that he has not had time to spend on the forum lately. I'm emailing him again on this issue with a few new suggestions. I'll report back when I know more. Thank you. Premium Members Charles King Posted April 7, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 Here's a suggestion. 1. Make all new registrations by new members approved by the moderators or Administrator only. 2. To start with, you can delete all registered members that have been posting this rediculous spam. around the forum. Just look at their nic handles and/or e-mails. 3. Like you suggested Alec, install a net web based anti-spam program, if possible. The first two points are easy and very effect. I have this system on my website and believe me, I have deleted hundreds of spammers before I approve of any new registration. So far, we haven't had one on the board ( knock wood)
Premium Members Kareem La Vaullee Posted April 7, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 I am the main moderator on a french forum for the movie and television industry technicians and since we decided to approve every new registrations we have zero problems, before that we started with a "if you don't use your real name you will be kicked" campaign for obvious reasons and it was a very good thing for the forum. We moderators on that forum have a strong presence and don't let people behave badly, we even banned for ever a few trouble makers (a young arrogant self-called "director" who liked to say insanely stupid things many times a day, a DoP who insulted someone in every new post, etc.) and now everything is going perfectly. I wish I could post more there but I decided to post only when wrong informations are posted or when I see what no one else seems to have the answer. I really hope that Tim is going to give you guys more control over this neat Forum. The fact that no one is deleting those spammers accounts is ridiculous, when I watch the Forum's members list and I see that we have 3662 members and most of them are spammers, well... On the forum I moderate I can have up to 5 fake registrations to delete, every day. If you need any help or advices I will be glad to help you. K. Premium Members Lukas Franz Posted April 7, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 President Bush should call back his troops from Irak and send them to this forum to fight all the spammers. Much more reasonable! :) Sorry for my political proposition. Don't take it too serious :P Cheers, Lukas

Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted April 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 I am 100% behind removal of spam and will happily re-register if that's what it takes, but let's not get too carried away. I mean, you can't really argue with "mutant dicks" and "Jessica Alba anal action". Dan

Premium Members Jason Williams Posted April 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 I have to say I have had NO signups - but that's because I have implemented a system where you are required to click one certain image to continue - but having quickly tested out the signup system, I can't see the CAPTCHA system has been used - enabling this helps, along with other ways too, but it is possible to stop them, it just takes a little work. Just my two cents..... Jason
