Ashley Roan
This is a reminder to let you know that we are now taking bookings for the up and coming Phil Balsdon Lightweight Steadicam Operators Workshop. This intensive two day workshop, based around Steadicam?s ingenious lightweight ?Flyer?, is to be held in Sydney on July 7-8 (Sat-Sun) at the Getting Creative studio in Artarmon, NSW. It will give you all the skills you need to fully assemble and balance the rig as well as teach you how to ?fly?. These workshops are designed for operators working with HDV and Mini DV cameras or film cameras such as the Aaton A Minima or Arri 235. The workshop covers all aspects of Steadicam? operation. After learning set-up and balance procedures you'll start basic exercises and composing simple shots. As we gradually introduce more advanced techniques the shots become more complex and by the end of day 2, each student will complete a complex "Grand Prix" shot utilising all the skills they've learned. Many previous attendees have stepped straight out of this workshop into professional Steadicam work. Additionally, all the techniques that you learn on this workshop are applicable to the ?big rigs? with some students having successfully stepped up from the Flyer to a full sized rig with what they have learnt. Following is a course outline: Day One (Saturday July 7) Steadicam? components, theory of how it works. Build and balancing the rig. Basic straight line ?flying?. Footwork and hand techniques. Framing and composition. Techniques for complex shots. Evening Session Video clips, discuss techniques used. Working on the set, communicating with director and crew. Freelancing. Day Two (Sunday July 8) Rebuild rigs, review day one Low mode, ride on and hard mounting techniques. Safety considerations. Grand Prix shot performed by each student. Wrap up The admission cost of $799 covers the two day workshop and evening viewing session, a comprehensive professionally prepared course manual, workshop certificate, lunch and morning/afternoon tea ? basically all you?ll need.
