one take video

Brad, I don´t want to be mean, but I thought the video was boring.

Now this is not only on your account, the director is responsible as well and the song itself is not so... exciting.

But what i miss is a development of moves, something different every time.

I can anticipate the moves ,looking at the video, before you even start them.

The in and out coming moves are almost exactly the same, while you could have opted to go behind the singer as well, so he appears from another side. Also, in these staged situations, the action of the actors should (mostly) demand the move, not the other way around.

It could also be improved when using a zoomlens and then have serious zoom-ins, focus pulls to the background, walk in and zoom-out (vertigo effect), anything to make it visually more attractive and moving.

This means more staging, good actors and a good focus/zoom puller, not sure if that was available.

Sorry to sound negative, I am not saying I would do any better, it´s just what i noticed right away.

Cheers,

Rob

Yeah dude, you SUCK! And I found your moves totally choppy and erratic. Oh wait a minute, that's the crappy Yahoo video player.

I'm guessing the creative responsibility on this fell to the director and DP. We're typically called in to simply nod yes and do what's asked of us with limited or no creative input. I bet the day Brad walked on set is the first time he saw it so where do you go from there? Not the fault of the operator.

Thanks for the feedback Rob.

I would have loved to do something different. I guess you didn't notice that the people changed clothes every time they went to the other side. This involved a trick which meant that I was very restricted in what I could have in frame during those moves in and out. That situation affected my opportunities for different framing choices as well. Of course, what you see is what the director and DP wanted as well....I was just the monkey with the camera. I'm sure you understand that I didn't design the whole shot. The only part I was able to add my two cents for was the bit over and around the bed. But I'm happy with how it turned out overall, and the bosses were happy too.

I actually like the song, so that helps as well.

Regarding using zooms in the shot....that could have been nice, but it wasn't what they wanted.

I just realized that I wrote "one take video" in the subject line. It was not one take of course...I'm a dope.

That is true, and please know that I have been in that situation too, where the "responsible" people take over completely and design the shots and I know it will not look good or boring at the editing.

Still my arguments are valid, I think.

A change of wardrobe only is not enough to motivate the moves here, there are better and more visible or surprising techniques for that.

YOU don´t suck, the operating is good, it is the design of this clip that sucks, in my opinion.

And you asked for my opinion.......

And that is still the major important thing.., the bosses are happy. That is loud and clear to hear at the end of the video

But it is a funny clip, also nice details like carpet and text colours..

Best, Erik

I appreciate the feedback, but I think maybe I'm not understanding exactly what you mean.

Brad, are you under an NDA about the wardrobe trick? just curious. I saw a piece on some talk show last year with a couple who did an elaborate magic show type number with multiple costume changes that happen virtually instantaneously, wondering if it was the same folks involved with this.

Charles, I think Brad said he changed his clothes everytime the actors changed sides. Quite a feat with the rig on. I've seen Brad do the "Hansel underwear removal" from Zoolander (don't ask how I sawBrad do this).

No NDA here. Different people than the ones you saw. But the fact that you're asking is proof that the trick worked well I guess. I'm happy to divulge, but maybe some people would like to try figure it out before I spoil it?
