Different rates for day playing on TV?

Was just having a conversation with a friend about day playing rates for network TV shows. The rate he quoted me sounded low. He pointed out that the regular operators were making those rates and it was fairly standard across the board.

Thinking more about it, it made more sense for someone who has the show as a regular gig. But what about day players? Do they typically make the same rate or do they negotiate higher rates because it's just for the day?

I'm sure there are a variety of deals, I just don't know what's common.

The producers will try to get a day-player in for the same rate, but in reality it should be much more. I have subbed for friends (and been subbed for) many times when I just came in for whatever they happened to be getting. I usually bring my vest and use their gear. But coming into a situation when I'm not covering a buddy or doing a favor I always try to get a "more normal rate."

When I was on Grey's the guys who came in for 2nd unit were making nearly twice what I was -- and that's how it should be...I got 9 months, he's got a day here/there.
