Need your advice on my Novice Steadicam Reel

Hey Guys,

 

I just finished my first year of steadicam and I have finally had some time to put a reel together. I know there?s a lot to be perfected. I love to hear what you guys think. What should I fix or work on? Also what parts of the video would you cut?

Hey Kyle,

 

For a first draft ever, the reel is ok. It seems that many of our first reels tend to be long (mine sure was) and the first suggestions we get is to shorten them. Shortening yours will showcase the very best of your shots, and decrease the amount of project "repeats" in the reel.

 

Simply getting jobs, however, is so much more than just a good reel. How you market yourself and politics is far more important. You've asked for comments on your website in the past and, in my opinion, it could still be a little more professional. How you change it depends on how you wish to advertise yourself - what type of jobs you wish to pursue. Also, be aware that Googling someone you're thinking of hiring is VERY common these days. Just a quick search on a person's name can tell you a lot. Just to see, I ran your name and the first thing that came up was your VileKyle website. I'm sure it's all in good fun with only good intentions, but not everyone may see it that way.

 

Prior to seriously pursuing this career, I had my own personal website that had a "friends" area that had a bunch of pictures of me, my toy collections, my halloween costumes and a bunch of my "thoughts" (before we had blogs). As soon as I began the work I do now, I knew I had to ditch all of that old stuff. Not that anything would make me look bad, I just didn't want anything to distract from my work. My friends loved the old site, and I still get complaints for taking it down, but I simply tell them I had to go pro - no room for pictures of my G1 Optimus Prime.

Stop cutting back to the same films. It makes it look like you are trying to pad your reel. Try to cut it down to about one minute of the best footage. As is it looks like you have shot nothing but student films. Whether that is the case or not, if you can minimize that feel it may help it to look more professional.

Hey Kyle,

Afton hit the nail on the head, playing the political game becomes more and more important, unfortunately your in the imfamous catch-22, you need work but you need experience to get work. Producers want to know what you have done and who you have worked for, then they ask for a reel. As for the Web again Afton is right inevitably you will get googled and IMDB and that will set the tone for a faceless name.

 

As for the demo reel, mix it up, don't repeat make it short. Even if your not on a project you can still get great shots for a demo reel showing off tracking, stairs and lots and lots of foreground
