Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted December 2, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 2, 2007 I thinking of buying a flyer or archer. Thanks If you are particularly small framed, you should go by Tiffen in Glendale and test the different vests. Call first to make sure they have compacts around to test. The Flyer vest and the Archer vest are two completely different animals. If you buy a new Archer I'd highly recommend that you consider upgrading the vest and getting the Ultra2 vest. It's not that much more expensive and for me it was more comfortable. I did that upgrade when I bought my Clipper 2 and then kept that vest when I upgraded again back in May because it was broken-in to my body. The op who bought my C2 went for the Ultra2 vest as well when we did the deal so I just swapped him the new vest from my new rig and kept my old one. Premium Members Tom Wills Posted April 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) I've attached a screen capture I took from the original Flyer manual. It looks like the big difference is the length of the main spar, so perhaps if you need the longer one, you could contact Tiffen about it. Also, you need to use your full first and last name on this board. Edited April 23, 2010 by Tom Wills

The longer spar is due to the fact that the woman, who is shorter has the chest plate chrushed to fit her torso. That is why it looks longer in that pic you posted. Premium Members Tom Wills Posted April 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 Actually, taking a look at it again, I see that I did miss something - the top portion of the compact vest isn't as tall as the standard one is. The spar does appear shorter to my eyes though - I suppose someone who's done more than just take a look at this vest quickly at a workshop should chime in. The Top portion of the Flyer compact vest is 2" shorter. The center spar is around 3" shorter I think.
Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted April 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 And to further clarify, the padded sections of the vest are identical between the Flyer standard and Flyer compact vest. This may change, as it's been noticed at Workshops (I've been told) that particularly small-framed folks (mainly women) still have problems with the fit of the Flyer compact vest. I'm 5'7" 165 lbs with a fairly short shoulder-to-waist measurement for my height, and the standard Flyer vest is a little too long for me. I velcro'ed some additional foam pieces to adjust it to fit me. At a workshop I found that I am also "in-between" the standard and compact Ultra vest. The Ultra vest fits me fine in the shortest configuration, the compact Ultra can be made to fit but the padding doesn't wrap far enough around my ribs. The LX standard vest is too long for me, didn't have a compact LX to try. Moral: try before you buy! It's a big investment and important to good operating. Peter Mozingo
I've attached a screen capture I took from the original Flyer manual. Also, you need to use your full first and last name on this board. I received my Steadicam Flyer24 LE today form UPS and it's amazing to say the least. I haven't been this happy since I got "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" for Christmas in '84, LOL. I also changed my display name, my apologies for missing that. Anyway, I tried the vest on and it seems to fit me fine. The waist belt portion sits right on my hip bone and all else feels fine, but I'm not sure what a properly fitted vest feels like either. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the position to try before I buy, so I went with this kit because it came with a free AB Dionic-90 battery ($400 value). The LCD built into the side is really cool too. I'll post pictures of my vest either later today or tomorrow for comparison. I might actually do a video on Vimeo to go over all the parts for review. I CAN say that the length of the main spar does seem shorter then it should be and rests directly in the middle of my chest when the vest is fully on and tight. Michael Sutton
I'm only 5'8" and currently own a Flyer (owned a Master Series Elite, a 3A etc) I think the standard vest is much more comfortable. Unless you are a smaller person I think you will disappointed with the compact vest my 2cents
