Premium Members Matteo Quagliano Posted December 12, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 12, 2007 hi everyone, I'm Matteo from Italy, I start excusing for my english, I'm new to the steadicam world but not in the biz, I've been operating the camera fro the last six years, but only in the last two weeks I decide to upgrade to the steadicam because of clients request. I've worked with some italian steadicam here in Italy so I got a little idea of what it is and I really like it. To get to the point, for thiswork I buy a steadicam made in Italy, for really a nice price 3500USD, my question is, can someone go to the website and have a look, at least a photo look, and give some feedback??? www.steady.it I know it's written wrong, but you know italian how are, I find myself quite good with this rig, I 've worked with a Sony betacam DXC-D30, quite heavy (9kilos), the only real problem was the orizontal balance... moving ahed and backwords no problem, but sometimes I loose the orizontal balance, to be honest there is no plate adjustment, you have to find the dynamic balance turning tha batteries to match tha camera weight, may be that's the problem? or it's just practice? ... notice that first shot I did was for work and was played on national italian tv (RAI) so was not so bad, but my point is to work good and in proper way I follow the advice I read so many times in this site, I start with a very hard tool to leaarn and to improve, thinking it will help start playing guitar on a fender stratocaster it's too easy, anyone can do it, starting on a eko give finger right strenght, think steadi is more or less the same... thank you all, and hope for some reply Matteo Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A steadicam operator friend of mine suggest me to put a "bolla" (that is a ball of air inside water, sorry I don't know the english word) on the monitor after I did the balance of the camera in a way I've always have under my eyes the orizontal balance, sounds good? Hey Matteo, The "bolla" you are talking about is called a bubble level or spirit level (or just level for short) in english. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_level And yes, they can be a very useful aid in judging and maintaining your horizon. Premium Members Matteo Quagliano Posted December 13, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2007 Thanks for your reply Matt and for your welcome. just another question, which kind of level do you use or suggest? because what I can find here in Italy it"s way too big, and for sure will affect my balance, also I have to put the bubble level after I did the balance causing obviously a change in the balance agian... looks like a dog biting to his tail... any tips? about the arm is it safe to have it more tensoined close to the body and softer near the camera? Premium Members Matteo Quagliano Posted December 13, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Chris, I know my next setp is going to follow a workshop, but untill then I have also to work and practice because here in Italy it's not so easy to find a good workshop, I did some practice in the last three weeks and I can see improvments. My problem is that I have to work with it, no time no excuse no regret, just do the job, so I will attend a workshop when I will find a good one and when I will have the time. A friend of mine told me about Switzerland to go for some good class and sure I will. But, again, right now I have to do the job and do it good. Movements are ok, some problems in the arriving frame and in the balance along the flying, my idea was to put a level to have a better impression on what I'm doing, now I make the rig heavier and more soft in the return (3-4sec) and things get really better but an electronic level would be great... does the mechanic one work in the same way? and the electronical level does fit to any monitor? Premium Members chris fawcett Posted December 13, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Matt, Maybe the workshop your friend mentioned was the February 2007 Swiss Steadicam Workshop in Locarno. The next European workshop will probably be elsewhere. I'll make sure its location and dates are posted on this forum when a decision is made. You will learn bad habits practicing on your own, and they become progressively harder to unlearn. As a working operator, it should be your priority to get trained as soon as possible. For example, you mention 9 kg as being heavy. Nine kilos is really light. You can imagine the damage you will do to yourself if you develop a bad operating posture. I assume you have bought the stabilizer in question. It's hard to judge from some photos, but the rig looks basic. I can't imagine you will be content with it for long. Don't feel discouraged by anything I say, Matt. It's a long road for any of us to achieve the standard to which we aspire in this profession. Premium Members Matteo Quagliano Posted December 13, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Chris, I'll check for sure the forum to know when there's going to be a workshop in Europe, my rig works up to 15 kilos, not more, and I'm working mostly with a sony betacam DXC-D30 (9/10 kilos) or a JVC hdv (3/5 kilos), quite light but the goal is to reach heavier pieces, but this will happen for sure with another rig. So now I keep practicing and working with this, the only one I have. I saw few operators working and one time I show my flying to one of them, a lot fo practice but positioning was ok, I don't feel so much pain after I use it and when I'm using it just a little but not unbearable. I woul like to send some footage edited with a camera filming me in box, not for skipping workshop just for not hurting myself ;) trying to fly safe, matt Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
