Nothing wrong with asking the more basic questions- we all have our own way of accomplishing this, right? I tend to ascribe to the theory that it's a back- and forth. Can't set a drop rate till I balance out the rig in the other two axis ( or, get close ). Can't get close with those two axis until I rough out a drop rate- otherwise the rig won't settle right. So, its a back and forthing for a few moments till things come into being very close. Then I make small adjustments, trying to keep the elements in balance statically if not dynamically. petrified, there are things to look at on the Steadicam Operators' Association web site- I believe that Jerry Holway's dynamic balance paper can be linked in there. There is a right way to have a Steadicam sit, but getting there? There is no set right way, there are certain things you have to do to get there. It was just I did'nt even think about it not coming with a tape or manual especailly if its used.Is it? Any way now that I got the crap kicked out of me by fellow Ops!?! :unsure: , For ME it's hard to expain the process you do just in letters to balance the rig out. Now if I was expaining it while I'm doing it, that would be a different story, but there are and I forgot what it's called and I'm looking right at it, CYBERCAM that it I had a Jessica Simpson moment, maybe myself or other Ops could do that for you to help you out. Again sorry about my first post. I can admit when I've done wrong and especially to a fellow Steadi Op. Good luck and keep flying!!!!!! I've learnt to balance out the rig using the fore-aft and side-to-side settings and such and tweaking the arm so as to avoid chasing the sled around and also adjust the drop rate. Kinda got the concept down. Just need more practice on it??or would you guys have any tips?? :) I've enjoyed my experience on the steadicam itself and i was looking to sign up for courses like the one in maine or the malibu classic. haha.till then. I have been using the master film series. And please do forgive my inexperience. I'm only 19? Young dumb and full of cum??as some people may say??Haha!! BETTER LATE THAN NEVER but atleast your doing it some 19 yr olds are only trying to get into one thing and so am I but the difference is with ALOT of practice and asking question and as Karlo said there's no such thing as a stupid question. when it come with experience all that come in time so take your OWN pace not someone elses and HAVE FUN :D!!! And by the way....I've only been a op for about 10months so I'm a NEWBIE also but from what I've learn from my mistakes and errors and talking to the guys here I've bettered myself as an operator. You're in a great situation, I would say get your hands on a manual, besides the drop time, side to side, and fore aft you also have your thumb screws and bolt adjusdtments at the socket block that will affect the float of your rig and Peter mentioned the dynamic balance primer that's available on this site. I own the same rig and she is a joy to fly, I've been oping for about the same amount of time as Nikk and I know that just like in camera oping, learning is an ongoing process and there are plenty of great new tricks to discover, both thru your colleauges and on your own. Been working on a couple of freelance jobs covering events and doing some shorts and stuff. I kinda life flying the rig with a drop time of a second or slightly more. Been practicing on it and such. Getting pretty used to the movement and such. One thing that i'm addicted to is whip panning. Just can't stop. LOL. Well yea, really apprecieate the pointers!!
