Matt Davies Posted December 21, 2007 Report Share Posted December 21, 2007 I am in my third year of university and writing my dissertation on Steadicam and the representations of the American Soldier in Vietnam War films. One film i am looking at is Kubricks Full Metal Jacket. I cant really find anything on Jean Marc Bringuier role as a Steadicam op in this film. I can see the shots but i want to know more about the operators intention and ideas as he took the shot. As a result i thought i would try and contact Jean Marc Bringuier. Yep, and I think Joe McNally owns one of the arms now, or did 18 months ago. Has anyone news of John? I heard differing news. He was the person who first got me interested in Steadicam. You know perfectly well, Kareem, that I did 90 per cent of this shoot, as long as Steadicam is concerned. What need is there to backstab a colleague, who happens not to be gifted in blowing his own horn? I've never contributed to this esteemed forum so far, but I stumble upon your innuendos and I think they need to be straightened out. I was called by Stanley one month into the film to replace John Ward who happened to be both businessman (through his rental company) and shop steward on "Full Metal Jacket". Stanley was not happy with his work behind the tanks and thought the Steadicam contribution needed a little more stamina, which of course is not to say that John is a bad operator. Needless to say, my first month was no bed of roses, because I was shooting with John's gear and all the shots I did were explained by the "Guv" to him, without a single word to the actual performer (it was his way of testing me, as Stanley is a great chess player who loves assessing people by pushing them to their limits). I remember trying to sympathise with John (my presence was certainly traumatic to him!) but to no avail. Finally, I had enough of being tripped up and asked Stanley for a clarification which I got. I shot with Joe Dunton's equipment as of october and up until december and John Ward disappeared from the set. I went to shoot a large commercial in Venezuela, as Lee Ermey got his car accident which delayed the whole film (it went on insurance claim). I was called again in the springtime and did a little more than six months of actual work all in all. I can ascertain that Stanley was happy of my Gallic way of floating his camera, and he even wrote me a kind letter which mentionned "your tremendous dedication to the film and, of course, your excellent work" I'm certainly proud to have humbly contributed to this great anti militaristic work. Sorry to butt in, but this awkward posting is in no way motivated by a bloated ego (I know alas that the clashes of egos is a sorry part of our trade) but I can't stay silent when I google by chance upon such nonsense. I am not backstabbing you in any way, it's just that I have been reading a Stanley Kubrick's biography and you and John Ward were mentioned in the "Full Metal Jacket" shooting part and from what I remember it said that you replaced John Ward a few days because he got sick, I will try to find back the book and check again, if my memory is right you will have to deal with the book's author and not me, as I don't know better.
