Let's try to keep only Pro type questions and discussion on the rest of the forum. While we are at it let's try to lower the noise ratio on the forum. However, if I see the real extensive posts that respected people like Peter and Larry and Charles have made where they not only address the newbie question but also go much deeper in details and practices, I think that that information is worth posting on THIS forum. It can be difficult to judge whether a post or question should be on the Newby or on Pro forum and I doubt that newbies are able or willing to make the right choice. I hope it works! I am as green as green can be, and yesterday I pinched my peroneal nerve (my thigh is all tingly!) flying a light load on an EFP. Is this a newbie issue, or can I take it up with the big boys? Bravo Rob! While there are some questions that some operators would not deign themselves to answer, I think we're in good company with the ones that don't see some of these questions as beneath them and do offer their help and advice because they were in the same position once as well. As far as the noise on the forum, well what do you consider noise? A new op asking a question gets a response from the likes of Peter, Larry or Charles to name a very few and it's read by ops around the world, or a posting about a movie screening or gathering of local ops which doesn't concern more than a small percentage of all the members? I read all the posts wether it's mundane questions or events I know I'll never go to, in the end it really does build a sense of community, isn't that the point? By the way Toby you probably should adjust your vest so that the load is resting more on your hips and shoulders rather than the tops of your puny deficient thighs, now avert your gaze! This is a valuable asset for us all, both seasoned pro and wanna be. I agree that the chatter should be kept to a minimum and maybe we can have Tim add a Forum section for Newbie type questions. This is an amazing place where all have a chance to share info and ideas. If we are all responsible and respectful of each other and our common goal (learning more and more about the art of Steadicam), we can all thrive together here. Premium Members Marc Abernathy Posted June 20, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 20, 2004 i think we need moderators (anthony brought this up b4 in the sugestion section). mods will keep the forum clean and move unneccassary posts to their respective forums. the off topic section was designed just to aid in the "chatter" and "noise" that eric speaks on. i think we need a FAQ section for newbies and for anyone who may have a question. sure we have the archives from the past forums (2002, 2001, etc etc...) but having frequently asked questions all in one forum for quick access makes much better sense imo. i enjoy to see the veteran Ops post and i agree that mindless chatter may keep some of them away. moderating this forum would make it a much better forum for all parties involved... This is why I was suggesting that David direct his efforts to getting various articles posted here rather than making a new site (or adding them to the Guild Site). Nothing against the Guild, but everybody seems to end up here, so why not put useful info here? As for moderators, as long as they don't censor, etc. that is fine with me. My one and only conecern is being able to find what you are looking for with ease. I really haven't done a search on this new forum yet... That was my only reason to put it on the guild web site. Perhaps I could organize/catergorize topics on the guild website with direct links to here? I'm not sure if that would work but I'm willing to give it a try. Two guys having a D*CK measuring contest. I don't mind newbie questions half as much as I do this crap. Maybe I'm wrong but I think most of us are pretty good at censoring our own posts. I think we need to be forgiving in that what is interesting to some may not be to others. I certainly only read about 10% or less of the forum topics. How do we manage what is appropriate? What is a newbie question? I know some are obvious but I've read many posts in many threads with good operators asking each other about how they balance their rigs. If we push all the newbies to their own forum who will answer their questions? When I was starting out with steadicam I had already been an operator on two different TV episodics for four years. I felt like a "newbie" and tried my best not to go on the forum and ask stupid questions but I'm sure I asked a few. I apoligize now and to repay my debt I will answer a few "newbie" questions this week for those of you I offended. Deal? Don't get me wrong, the newbie forum is a great place for new guys to chat with each other but if they have a good question I think we, being the guys that can, should help answer it. To minimize the chances of the same questions being asked over and over again I'm with David. There should be a way to type in a question and have the archives try to answer it. Might help all of us not just the "newbies". I recently was inquiring about tilting stages only to have all my questions answered while browsing five minutes later. Had to go back and erase my questions. It was so funny to me a couple of weeks ago there was a post from someone wanting a mentor. I've never seen so many responses to a post so quickly. I posted as well. What does this say about us? Don't waste my time with stupid newbie questions but if you stroke my ego a bit and respect the hierarchy you'll fit in just fine? I'm sure I'll be elected to answer all the questions now. :unsure: Sorry to be so long winded. I'm only trying to say that we are or at least should be a community from the bottom up. How about a forum for the guys that do 100million dollar features and then another for guys that only do television. That way I won't bother the feature guys with my questions. One of my points was that if newbies post their questions on a newbie forum there will be no one there to answer the question.
