New Archer owner

Hi everyone, thought I'd introduce myself here. I'm a new operator, coming from the home-built world, and recently having taken the plunge into a brand new Archer. My life changed five years ago when I stepped out of the theater after seeing Russian Ark and knew what I wanted to do.

If I had skipped the DIY stage, I would have saved enough money to also buy a BFD with motor, a Modulus 3000, a few miles of velcro, and about 25 of those metal pipe steddi-kams they sell on eBay. But then, I wouldn't have learned as much about how and why things work the way they do. Money (and time) well spent.

Ops are a rare breed here in Colorado, there are only a few of us. For now, it's still just an expensive hobby of mine, but hopefully I can turn it into something more. Maybe even before those interest-free credit card offers expire.

Hey Alan! Nice to see you here.

For everyone that may not know, Alan has been a great contributor of shots to SteadiShots. There are a handful of people that regularly send me shots for posting on the site, and Alan has always been consistently good. I'll thank and welcome him here publicly.

Best Regards,

Afton

Congrats Alan on the new rig and your dedication! If you're ever in Las Vegas give me a call.

There is one page missing in the instruction manual for the Archer and other new rigs; it's the section explaining how as the owner of a new rig you need to budget for the mandatory and all important round of drinks for everyone here

All the best!

Thanks for the welcoming words, everyone! As far as I am from either coast, it will be a while before I can get around to buying people drinks, so I'll start saving now.

I have been in regular contact with Chris, he's a great guy and has given me a lot of advice, as have many on this board. I've been meaning to go see his recent work in One Missed Call.

And Afton, just so you know, I had to cut some expenses and cancel my Netflix, so my Steadishots contributor status could accurately be described as "former", I'm afraid. I still had about 85 movies in the queue.

I am going to be in Boulder the beginning of February for a 3 day steadicam workshop if you feel like buying someone a drink ;-) Or I could buy you one.

Thanks again to everyone. I had my first live concert shoot with the Archer last night, tethered. I would have liked to move around the stage more, but you know, there's that whole ... audience ... thing.

Jess, I'll be at the Boulder workshop, too. I'll probably be the one running out to pick up lunch for everyone. Does that count as buying a drink? Didn't think so. See you there!
