Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted January 23, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 23, 2008 No experience with those monitors but in the price range of 3000 bucks you can get an 8.4" boland hd monitor and it kicks but. It works great in sunlight and the company does a really good job workign with your perticular needs (for example on mine they put the same 7 pin connector on the back that I have on my pro monitor). There are certainly better options out there in terms of daylight viewability - but it's still a useful monitor for indoors / studio use. A client of mine has the Marshall which is nice for INT work but not nearly bright enough for EXT shots. I am sure there are others but for my money, the Boland is the one to fly. Sorry to jump in on your answer but I felt compelled, I personally think the 8.4 is too big, but since it's the smallest size Boland makes I hear it's a pretty awesome monitor. Mike still hasn't created the advertised 6.5" one yet . . .!? Has anyone else found any other LCDs other than the new Panasonic (BTW is still not daybright) , that does 16x9 NTSC, HD/SDI and is Daybright ? Uugh . . . Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted January 24, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 I don't think the 6.5 inch is out yet but I'll buy one for a back-up as soon as it's available. It is big but definately not too big. I used a PRO Green Screen for the better part of ten years and it is one of the nicest pieces of Steadicam equipment made. Its super sharp has great contrast, great features built in... There is a reason many of the top Steadicam operators in the world use that monitor. That being said......................... I've been using the 8.4" Boland for about 4 months. I originally thought I'd give it a try and use it as a back up monitor if it worked well enough. I havn't put my PRO monitor back on once since I tried the Boland. It's a similar difference between a 32" tube TV and a 42" plasma TV. It is larger than the Green screen monitor but it's actually lighter. It IS slightly less viewable at extreme angles and in direct bright sunlight than the green screen is BUT it more than makes up for that in image size and the fact that you can see in color. I can't tell you how quickly I've gotten used to watching everything in color! And, when using an HD camera you can actually have an image that is as good as the image everybody else is watching. Now I'm sure that there is going to be a situation I havn't yet thought about that I'm going to want my trusty PRO monitor back on my rig. And for all I know the Boland might blow up when it hits the year old mark (though I'm sure Mike at Boland would fix it or replace it in 24 hours at no charge). In terms of bang for your buck, you can but five Boland 8.4" ultra brights for the price of one PRO monitor. I'm not saying that the PRO monitor isn?t worth every penny but if money is tight the Boland is a great option. I flew Brain Hall's rig (a mk-v with a Boland) and the monitor size definately made me more cautious. I was afraid of running the monitor into something and knocking it off. I had to use the analog HD feed from the camera, since my post cable doesn't do well with HD-SDI (will have to look into that). This meant I could only watch B/W, as I was using the VF output. The image was not very bright (as said before 400 NITS, which is about 1/3 of the superbright Cine IIIa I normally use). I don't know if using the HD-SDI input (in color), would change anything in terms of light output... As soon as one of the Varilite beams hit the screen, there was not much left to see. I did like the built-in framelines and horizon. Both of them are easy to set up, and have many styles to choose from. The controls are OK, but the rotary knob that controls all menu functions was too sensitive for me. Trying to scroll down one line I often ended up two or three lines below. I must say I love the size of the screen (I used the 8") I didn't feel I was restricted or more scared to bump into things. Overall, a nicely made monitor with lots of features that would appeal to us, it's just a shame it isn't any brighter... If they ever make a superbright version, I'll be first to order one. It does HDSDI and is 7 inches. It is 550 NIT, even though I was told once the initial production was sold off they are going to work on a 1000 NIT one. So I think if enough people ask for it, they'll make it. It isn't as bright as I would want in a monitor, but the only time I can't see an image is if bright light is directly shinning into the monitor, otherwise the picture is there. I did take it out in the sun, and the only time I lost the image was when the sun was directly shinning into it, granted, there were some other angels where the image looked darker depending on my angle to it, but I could always make out a picture. I haven't tried it with a sunshade, but I think if I had one, it would be better. I have used this monitor as a hand held for clients, I have to say the viewing angle is way better when on the rig, when you hold the monitor closer to your face, the viewing angle isn't so good, but when on the rig, the viewing angle is so much better. Just like a lot of people I was looking for an HDSDI 7 inch monitor. I didn't want a big monitor, even though I like the idea of a 8 inch monitor, but I have found them to be a little big for me. (that's what she said) :P sorry, I know immature. This isn't the end all to end all monitors but it is pretty good, works well for me and I am happy with it. FYI, I got the Film style back which means the connectors come out the side instead of coming straight off the back. I don't know which one would be better, but I made the theory in my head that I didn't need any cables coming straight off the back to get caught on anything.
