Red on my Rig

I guess, if with the setup you described your gimbal was all the way to the camera platform and your post was completely extended--much less of either of those things, and you should have been able to recreate the relationships by adjusting the gimbal. Consider also the added stress that a heavy camera places on the topstage when it is leveraged out...

Charles, I know percisely what you are describing. I'm basing my assumption on my DVX w/ 15lb weight plate in low mode. I could only get the gimbal halfway between the stage and post extension, and I was putting up with much faster than a 2sec drop time.

But anyways...back to the topic at hand! ;)

So this is "old news" already but for those who haven't already drank the kool-aid...RED has announced the proposed Epic and Scarlet specs over at red.com, and it's a pretty interesting read. I won't post any details here. Just go spend some time on their site, and we can discuss.

28K huh? Why'd they stop there? How about a killion-tillionK? Even though that sensor seems as though it will be marketed specifically to the special photography market, that 9K Epic sensor ain't small. I think that thud I heard in the middle of the night was the sound of all the 1st's in the country passing out and hitting the floor.

Although the original Red was designed to be modular, it appears as though these new kids will be a dozen times more modular than their predecessor. With virtually every component customizable down to the chip, I fear that package-to-package camera consistency will be totally lost. The camera/component checklist when taking calls will be a mile long. Charles, I recall somewhere you mentioned putting together a "Steadicam package" for use with the Red cameras. While helpful with the current cameras, something like that is looking to be a downright necessity for the new ones.

You've got to hand it to them for pushing the technology to the edge of the cliff..... and then building more cliff. Should be an interesting next couple years.

Agreed Afton. I'm sure a few people are eyeing those modular exploded views of components and starting to imagine a stabilizer that consists of sensor and lens up top and the rest of the gack at the bottom...imagine shooting full-on 35mm format with a rig in the Flyer's weight range.

For those who are lost on the new direction this conversation has turned, read here:

When I saw the article, I smiled a little bit. What a huge wrench in the gears for everyone who thought they had it figured out! Things are looking up for us flyer guys

Well they listened to some suggestions, completely ignored others and then gave themselves the insane task of developing 8 new cameras instead of 2 when they still haven't realeased all of the accessories that were supposed to come out with the Red One. There are definitely interesting things on the horizon for Red. Looks like the SI2kMini stuck in their mind a bit.

First let me say I own a RED one and i am pleased they are offering to take it in on a trade at full value. The problem is all they accessories that were made to fit this camera don't look as though they will fit on some new configuration. Much of that stuff costs near what the camera body costs, so throw that money in the trash or hope to sell it off. Still not sure what configuration would be better or necessary. And I agree that consistency in camera packages with all those different options will be a problem . I like the picture of the camera in hand held mode that doesn't include the simplest thing, a handle on top to pick the thing up and carry it around. I just did a few days of hand held work on a series where the dolly grips are now calling themselves the A camera and B camera picker-up-ers.

You may see how I managed my old sled 3A to work with RED. Attached to the camera is a downconverter Miranda plus link IDX CW-5HD. I am very satisfied with the link... and that all of this is powered by the RED`s batt, not from the sled. The weight of everything is similar to ARRICAM LT.

Regards :)
