This should be under Steadicam Aesthetics

In retrospect, looking at this thread in its entirety Job, do you still think so...?

My thought is that this is exactly the kind of discussion that we were thinking should not go into this category, as it has largely been about the "nuts and bolts" (still a valuable discussion, but not about aesthetics).

I think we'll just have to learn how to use this new category over time.

I agree with Charles about the "nuts and bolts" taking over in this situation. It's easy to fall into a technical discussion because it's the majority of our job.

The cable issues were the first thing to pop into my mind as well, but sticking to aesthetics...

This type of shot is very common for this type of subject matter, except this shot happens to be well executed very well (better than many I've seen) and does alot to help the boring song. I would personally like to see some cuts/dissolves to break up the monotony of the shot (no offense to afore mentioned telented operator -- more of an issue of the director's choices).

ive worked with john before and he HAD a Masters--but that was a while ago. Johns moves are breathtaking. seeing him and his Wrangler work together is amazing.

ok... Ok... You guys are killing me.... If you keep feeding Johns ego I'm never going to get him to keep filling for me .....LOL ....

FYI... He is using a Master Series

Ya know.... Come to think of it I have been filling in for him the past three weeks and good lord John not sure what you were thinking when you set the standard on this show ! LOL

Nice work as always

Great stuff John! I saw this other clip on youtube (i'm a youtube junkie) which was a 4 minute steadicam move from american idol a few weeks ago and I found out your name was in the credits. Did you do this shot? If you did I have some questions about it: Were you tethered to a cable there also? What goes into making a long shot like that? Looked like something hit the camera at one point...what was that?

Here is the video...

Yes it was me on American Idol that week....Dave Eastwood was on vacation.

The director wanted to try the song all on Steadicam, so I got with him and the choreographer and plotted out the move. We ran the song 3 times in rehearsal, made some minor changes, and then on to the live show. This move was very complicated for the lighting department because of having to hit cues for 11 contestants at different times on the stage. We had several vari-lites and 5 follow spots in different angles around the stage that had to key the talent based on where the camera was. A couple of cues were missed and as a result you saw my shadow in a few places.

That bump you saw was one of the contestants (Syesha) running around the back of the camera to get to her next location on the couch without being seen. She accidentally ran right into the back of my sled as she passed because she was in a hurry. There was nothing I could do...we were live and I didn't see it coming. You have to remember that Idol contestants are not professional talent, and rarely hit the same mark twice. There were a couple of times I had to hold my position because I was waiting for contestants to arrive at their mark just out of frame. One example is at 2:28sec in this particular video. Her arrival could be seen on 16:9 monitors, but the people at home viewing 4:3 didn't see that at all. We really needed more rehearsal for a Steadicam move like that, but the shows schedule just didn't allow so we did the best we could.

Yes I was tethered by a fiber HD cable, and all my rigs are Master Series. They don't want us to be wireless on Idol because the 1 frame delay is noticable when shooting singers.

Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for all the feedback.

Hey Rob V...thank you for doing AR for me. You should know that I got very very good feedback about you. Yes the standards were set very high, but I knew you could handle it. Great work! Hopefully you are available for the next one in November...4 weeks of work!

I just finished Idols with an AR overhere. Hitting the Mark or remember things is/was indeed the problem.

Nice work though

Just to piss Rob of, some extra ego feeding... :P

Really nice job John, cool to see once again a full song shot.., this is or becomes now a speciality from you ?

Also, a nice addition for your reel ? (without the bump ofcourse..)
