Just to piss Rob of, some extra ego feeding... :P

Really nice job John, cool to see once again a full song shot.., this is or becomes now a speciality from you ?

Also, a nice addition for your reel ? (without the bump ofcourse..)

Erik

Thanks Erik. It's not really a specialty, but I don't mind doing shots like these if the director requests them. I am just happy to be working in this "recession" and potential SAG strike.

By the way, Charles for some reason your weblink to the Idol shot isn't working but I found another link to the same shot (so this thread will make sense to future readers):

While John's move was certainly acceptable, most of you have obviously missed the most important shot of that song. Mine, that under exposed, slightly out of focus, missed frame shot of someone nobody knows clapping at the very end. Brilliant!

Nicely done as always , John. Always nice to work with a pro.

Hey John, I always record American Idol for the purpose of studying Dave Eastwood's craftmanship and when I saw this on my DVR I thought it was Dave shooting - very smooth operating I think you did a great job and I know you are not used to hardwire compare to with AVS system in it. I don't know if you can still remember me, I did assist you one day on Oprah's Big Give. Last week I got a chance to fill in to shoot Steadi with AVS wireles system at CBS So you think you can dance. I thought that show is pretty tough because of rehearsing the song 3x before you shoot the actual show. Anyway, it's great to see you shooting like Eastwood.

Sorry Rob, good guess with Freddy but it looks like I am the guilty one...I worked this show in Nashville last month. When I am not filling in for Eastwood, Vuona or Hector here in LA, I manage to occasionally get back to my old stomping grounds of Nashville to work a show or two. Thanks Charles and Sebastion for your kind words. It means a lot especially coming from my peers.

It's funny because I never saw the finished product until this link was posted, and it looks like the editors cut off the first 10 seconds of the piano intro with the camera moving up the strings & hammers. They got into the song at an odd moment when I was changing directions....oh well, thank you post production :( The director and I plotted the camera move with only a music chart, cd, and one practice during sound check. After the rehearsal we made a few notes, drank a Jack Daniels (we were in Tennessee, afterall), and what you saw was the finished product. Unfortunately I caught my shadow a little bit in the beginning, but if I were given the chance at a 2nd take, it would have been perfect ;)

I must give most of the kudos to my camera utility, Hugh Wilson. Without the guys behind me managing the cable and spotting me for safety, I could not do what I do. It was a heavy Ikegami HD camera tethered by a fiber camera cable, which made the move a bitch to accomplish without getting snagged or tangled, tripping over footlights and audio monitors which are hard to see on a darkened stage, or seeing my cable in the shot because of the multiple 360's. Thanks Hugh!

The director of the Grand Ole Opry series (Jim Yockey) loves Steadicam and gave me 2 entire songs in the show to shoot with one shot, all on Steadi. The other song was a ballad by Brad Paisley which I have yet to see. I'll look for it on YouTube I guess.

Cheers,

John

PS. Rob Vuona, call me when you can regarding Link HD wireless hardware. I have prices and info...how much $ do you want to invest? It's damned expensive!

Thanks Donovan...yes I remember you doing a great job with me on Oprah's show. Email your contact info when you get a chance. So You Think You Can Dance is one of the most difficult shows I have done. On that set there are not many places to hide or exit the stage, and i'm running top speed on almost every shot. Not to mention the wireless hardware on the back of a Sony 1500 makes the damn thing about 3 feet long and as heavy as an Arri 435. I have hit myself in the nose several times when switching sides. Eastwood will be doing Dance next week, then I do the rest. Hope we don't get brain tumors from using that avs wireless stuff all the time.

Johnny P you did it again! I just watched your moves on So You Think You Can Dance tonight and yet another performance all on Steadicam without cutting away. I'll try to find a youtube link to post. It's good to see tv directors using our craft like that. I think its much better than the MTV look where they cut to different cameras every other second. That style is really hard for me to watch. I like to see longer shots and watch things develop, especially on Steadicam. Looks like one shot performances are becoming your niche whether you like it or not ;) Great work once again.

I am fairly new to this craft but I do appreciate good work when I see it. Just ran across this clip on youtube but didn't catch the credits on the show....anyone know who did this? I'm not really a country music fan but this is truly amazing camera work I think.

Kudos to whoever it was!

Even thought this is an old thread it would be interesting to see the video. I followed the link only to be greeted by a red banner with the words,

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Gaylord Entertainment Company."

I also checked the other youtube videos and they have also been removed.

If anyone knows where I can find this videos it'd be great to see them.

Thanks for anyone who can help here.

Jack

Since we all see the last time 'extra's ' like in sync / simultaneously a background behind the scenes camera, i would VOTE to see

something like that during John's work.. love to see that, any volunteers ? Rob maybe ?

Best, Erik

Erik,

What makes you think I would be just hanging around on the set while John is working and I could shoot a behind the scenes . . . . .LOL . . . . .

Geeze . . . . If I did that I would need my fisheye lens to fit Johns head into frame . . . .LOL . . .

Not that it's like tyhat now John, but it would inflate If I became his behind the scenes videographer . . . .

Maybe Soulman can set up a lock off camera to help facilitate this curiosity

I still admire the work in this shot from both John and Hugh...

Ironically, I'm doing a shoot today and Thursday and this morning I asked the Producer who they normally use back East? John Perry was the answer.

Then I see this thread resurrected and watch the shot again... guess I'd better eat my Wheaties and lay off the Starbucks before I go in at 3:00 pm.

I've been lucky enough to work on a few concert shoots where John was operating...I was handheld or on sticks. It's a pleasure to watch him work, and a pleasure to work with him. A virtuoso and a great guy to boot.

Next time he's in working in Nashville, I'd be happy to volunteer to shoot some BTS of him at work.
