Katerina Kallergis
Hey guys, I'm looking into a new car for myself. Considering all the equipment I've got now is a tight fit in the Corolla I've got and it isn't all that convenient. I figure a hatchback of some sort could do the trick. I've been focusing on the Scion Xd or the Honda fit. Both small but loads of cargo space. Anyone have one of those and care to share what they think? Also, I wanted to put a hitch on the back for a vehicle mount. Is this impossible with a hatchback or would I have to go with an SUV for this? I thought this was the best place to post this. That Smart car is real "cute" but too small, even for me. Thanks in advance. -Kat

Although there's some new Hybrid and electric vehicles coming out in the end of 2009 so you may want to look there. Also, the new Nissan Cube looks interesting and Ford has a new little truck that seems perfect for Steadicam All the best,
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 21, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 21, 2009 the Fit is a nice little car. I have a Mazda3 hatchback which is a little bigger. I use it when truck is not feeling well after excursions or won't fin in garage! All my gear with a yeager jr cart fits inside. RB
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted April 22, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted April 22, 2009 Kat, Don't have one but the Mazda 3 is a blast (rented one when last in LA - actually, I just stole Ron's and left it full of empty beer cans). Look at a VW JTI too. I gave serious thought to an Audi A3 hatchback, but ultimately all of these little cars require a bit of Tetris to pack them. Plus, who knows what gear you may buy next so make sure it is big enough for you to still expand your gear. I drive a Toyota Hilander Hybrid because it gets better milage than many of the hatchbacks with a lot more cargo room.
Katerina Kallergis
Thanks for the input! I forgot about the Mazda 3, it's a nice looking car. I was looking at some Hybrid SUVs, the Ford Escape and the Mercury Mariner to be specific. As much as I'd like to "go green" the price tag keeps knocking me in the head. But what do you guys have to say about the whole hitch situation for the vehicle mounts? -Kat

Kat, do me a favor and start that one under a new topic so people can find it later. Thanks!
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted April 22, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2009 Mazda 5 alternative Mazda info Edmunds on Mazda 5 the mazda 5 is a good alternative, sliding doors!, lots of cargo room, good value (18K plus)
Katerina Kallergis
Mazda 5 alternative Mazda info Edmunds on Mazda 5 the mazda 5 is a good alternative, sliding doors!, lots of cargo room, good value (18K plus) So I went to Mazda and checked out both the Mazda3hatchback and the Mazda5. Looks to me like a sharp looking, fast, little hatchback but a bit small in the cargo area. The Mazda5 is pretty interesting. Ssshhh, don't call it a minivan. Although, that's what it is but a smaller, sportier version. The sliding doors could come in very handy, the cargo space seems to be limitless and the MPG is above average. I am also gonna take a look at the Dodge Caliber and the Chevy HHR. According to some info on the web, they both have good cargo room (the HHR more so). All three have comparable fuel effiency. The search continues...
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 25, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 25, 2009 the Mazda5 has interested me as well. But I am actually trying to slim down my stuff (been inspired by the ops in NY) so for now the 3 will be fine. As far as mpg...I drove to Vegas last summer with the cruise on 85 and got 28 mpg. Better than I expected at that speed...but the car was nearly empty except my fat ass, 2 bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and 2 dozen tubes of Lisagav. rb

And when you are not hauling gear, you can have Ron fly around in the cargo area.... but make sure you put some plastic down first... he is not house broken...
