Premium Members Mark Calver Posted March 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 14, 2008 Hello everyone, So I decided to make a diamond plate bottom shelf for my Magliner. I didnt want the bottom shelf with the lip because it was to hard for me to get my cases in and out. The diamond plate tread is really grippy and the cases dont slide at all. I just wanted to post a couple pics and maybe get some feed back from some people. So let me know what you think. thanks, Mark
Premium Members Joshua Harrison Posted March 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 14, 2008 It looks great but seems like it might be heavy. I once used a rubber matting that I bought at home depot. I think it comes three feet by as long as you wan(it comes in rolls but you can buy the desired length there.) It has ridges on it that run lengthwise so nothing ever slid off my magliner. Josh
Premium Members Mark Calver Posted March 14, 2008 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 14, 2008 I was concerned about the weight at first but it does seem to make my cart overall more rigid. And since i balance my rig off my cart I indefinitely benefit from it.

I suspect you maybe will get some response from our Pimp my Steadicam Cart guy, Erwin.. he is the guy with all the cart experience. It looks very cool Mark ! I did it several times...ouch josh
Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted March 25, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 I did the same thing to my magliner and to my rubbermaid (the one on my rubbermaid fits inside the bottom shelf and makes a stronger more bottom heavy cart). Nice work! Is it 1/4 inch??? mm.
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted April 13, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 13, 2008 Hi mark, Looks nice... I always had a soft spot for Diamond plate... maybe the fact that I had to deal with the local fire department a lot as a kid... (I blew up a transformer in a skyscraper where we lived, when I stuck a knitting needle into a wall socket, we had to be rescued after a huge flood and and we got food for a couple of days by fire department boats as our house in my village was under water on another occasion, and I used to light everything on fire as a teenager...) Anyhow... I'm torn about the lip. It is very handy when you go "off road" with your cart and encounter pot holes and the likes, the diamond plate does not give enough grip without an additional strap. Loading can be painful with a lip at times especially with heavy cases, but it gives you the grip on inclines to not loose your stuff. My current cart has a 3 inch lip and that was killing me... but I found a solution for that one as well... Also Diamond plate is heavy, think about flying and transport. It looks like you turned the lower shelf upside down and attached the plate on top. That looses you an inch of usable space, then you have to raise the top shelf... oh... can of worms... been there. It will never be perfect, also as you change your equipment and you work more on different projects, stuff that seamed so essential turns unnecessary and other things you never paid any attention will drive you bonkers... for a solution/change/better idea... Nice work, keep on moding. Erwin
Premium Members Mark Calver Posted April 14, 2008 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) that brings back bad memories of being a camera assistant losing skin on my shins to another AC's cart that had protruding metal... I did it several times...ouch josh josh, Surprisingly the frame I welded underneath the diamone plate protects you very well against any abrasions. I am however adding rubber bumpers to all four corners for the sole for protecting walls and such and i might end up just adding rubber along the whole length of the bottom shelf. There has been a lot of rubbing already and it will just protect everything. Erwin, like I said I welded the frame under the bottom shelf myself, It is only 1/2 inch and the diamond plate is i think 1/8. I didnt lose enough space to really bother me. I did however add the drawer under my top shelf which did lose me a lot of space, But the I cant complain about being able to lock stuff away oon set and not worry about it. I will post some pics when I get a chance. mark Edited April 14, 2008 by Mark Calver
