socket block spring vs back mounted vests

I am re-starting this post here because I am finding more out and to keep things focused? here we are.

 

So the original post was about:

"If you have a DSD or Klassen vest, why do we need the spring in the socket block adapter part of the arm?

 

Howard Smith and RobVanGelder both chimed in and said they have 3A arms where they have taken out the spring and they both like it very much without it. Rob said he has had his arm without the socket block spring for years and "did not miss it one moment!"

I have a Pro arm, so today I talked with George Paddock briefly about the realities of taking the socket block spring out of my arm.

He said he has NEVER had anyone talk to him about doing this, but that it is not a big thing to do. And he told me that if I wanted, I would be able to put the spring back in the socket block without any special tools [except maybe a vise]

So I am going to try this sometime this week?

Now here is a question:

Does this spring help if your doing hard mount work?

I would say that the forces that are on the arm when loaded with a rig are much greater than a little spring like that could hold or stabilize. It could do a little bit in avoiding bumping into the socket block when unloaded, when you walk around between takes with no rig.

 

And same is true with Hard mount, at that place where it is situated you need a much stronger spring if you want it to press the socket hinge flat against the stop under load.

 

I used my arm without the spring on many hart mounted shoots and again, didn´t miss the spring there.

 

Now, I will ask one of the manufacturers to make me a arm connection that fits the bottom part of my arm and goes to the socketblock part at the other side, in one piece.

 

With the recent blow out I had I think I don´t need the whole construction with bolts and springs and pins as I can adjust everything with my DSD vest.
