And I think the Steadicam world would be the closest to telling me if such a montir rig could be created. What i'm dreaming of is a monitor that: 1) size and weight of PSP (playstation portable) 2) wireless video reception of A & B Cameras (or at least A camera) 3) all battery powered. low wieght more important, I don't mind swapping batteries throughout the day. Can you think of a rig that can be put together? If you are by chance a manufacturer, the following added features would really be amazing: 4) with small cellphone like lens to take digital stills, and record brief videos. Also displaying lens size like any viewfinder for various formats. 5) automatic recording of takes, and multiple frame rate renders like Vantage's PSU (http://www.pagelocation.com/pagelocation/psu.htm) I'm surprised something like this hasn't been developed yet for directors. Or maybe you know of something similar that's already out there? Also, I'm just curious, has there's been any research in sending video signals through WIFI technologies? As far as wifi, there are several products on the market that use wifi, but there are a couple of problems. First, wifi systems tend to have an unacceptable delay of usually .5 to 1.5 seconds (though the literature will claim .3). Second, they have problems in signal loss when one moves from one WAP (Wireless Access Point) to the next. There are ways around this, but they require the installation of a significant infrastructure before hand and are best suited to arena-type locations such as a sporting event. I have designed such a system myself but the demand has not been outweighed by the cost of development and therefore has not been implemented. Contact me and I will go into further detail with you and review the specifics of the application you have in mind. Here's one example: http://www.hpvdo.com/products/index.html navigate to handheld monitors (through all of the flash silliness) Item 4 is interesting, although the concept of a cellphone-type lens and one that displays focal length are mutually inclusive (yes, any director's finder has those engraved on the barrel, but a board-level lens obviously doesn't have a barrel...would you be happy if this thing had a good size lens sticking out of it? if so, a C-mount surveillance camera would probably do the trick). Item 5 is doable on a basic level but the variable frame rate part is a bit tricky in a handheld obviously--the box you link to is the size of a tower computer! A boy can dream, however. I'm guessing you don't have a dedicated video assist operator on your shoots with a hard drive system who would be able to build those speed ramps for you...? This is what I use... http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.ph...lcd-sd-mmc-usb/ Its the size of one of those old little Casio mini TV's except this receives a 2.4ghz Video signal - works with the Transvideo Titan system and most of the cheaper transmitters too. And also... wait for it...... you can RECORD the received signal onto a flash (SD) card which slots into the top of the unit! - records in MPEG4 format - avi files. You can also playback the recorded videos and even MP3's to get through that extended downtime between shots. Also has a composite video in and out for onboard recording. The rechargeable battery is built into the unit, so you cant replace it on the fly... which is why ive got 5 of these little guys. One charge will last about 4 hours non stop. They are great for giving to the Director to roam around set with. The best thing is it will fit in the top pocket of a shirt, no bulky batteries / wires hanging off it. The other great thing about this little receiver, is it only costs US$130 each... thats right! DivX 6.0, 640 x 480, Millions Microsoft ADPCM, Stereo. 25fps It is fairly compressed, but for viewing on the small screen its more than fine.. even viewing on a larger monitor is ok to check framing etc. To start stop recording, it is really easy, one button to pause / continue once your recording. (makes new file each time) One of the best gadgets i've ever bought.
