Unlock iPhone??

Have any of the brilliant tech minds achieved iPhone freedom yet?

If I knew I could use the phone when I travel and use local pay-as-you-go local SIM cards in other countries, I would give up Verizon (which I really like) and put up with AT&T for the sake of maintaining all my contacts in my phone and sync bliss w/ my laptop no matter if I travel etc.

Australia seems to have a lead on hacking the phone. Check this site out:

Any of the local Aussies care to weigh in??

My Buddy who shot stills on Nim's Island said a lot of the US crew were buying iPhones there in Australia because they were unlocked due to no exclusive contract with any carrier at the time. Meaning they could bring the phone back to the US and use an AT&T sim card in the phone here in the US.

Will,

Job told me I can use any carrier I want with the IPhone if I use izip to unlock it, I wonder of it will work internationally, I'm heading out of the country for over a month and I agree it would be cool to have that piece of gear to use in other countries

Hmmmmm

Peace out

Hi Will,

I downloaded a very simple piece of software called Independence that is super simple to use.

It offers a "jailbreak" to allow you to use third party applications and also a Sim Unlock feature. Pretty straight forward and easy to use. I did not do the Sim unlock feature but the jailbreak worked like a charm. You can go back and forth with unlocking and jailbreaking.

You might want to download it and try a jailbreak while looking into the Sim unlocks.

Once you go iPhone you'll never look back I don't think.

All the best!

UNLOCK TOOL

Sup will, long time no hear.

Use the above tool. Very simple, takes a few minutes and its done. Its a little bit better then the Independence tool robert was talking about according the reviews. Every carrier, every country. Even a feature to put it back to factory settings in case your iphone brakes and need repaires at apple. My assistent brings his laptop on every show we do. He unloks at least 8 iphones a day for everybody on the set, lol. Hes a real expert these days, hahaha

And make sure you install MORE COWBELLS

-edit- MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND ICAL BEFORE USING THE TOOL, OR YOU LOSE EVERYTHING -edit-

I purchased my international sim calling cards from here:

https://www.united-mobile.com/

I do a lot of island jobs and this is way cheaper than $2.50 a minute AT&T charges on some of the islands.

I like the fact you can pick your own phone number from a list.

I also like to test the sim before I leave the country.

HAHAHAHA, That just made my day. What an ass that guy from the apple store.

Yes, put a paperclip deep in there and voila, sesamy openup.

Ones you unlock your iphone, it will work with any card in any country. And yes, you can update whatever you want. Just dont use the softwareupdate in itunes. Its now 1.1.4 and in time the will add feautures in 1.1.5 or something. Ones the come out with new software it takes a week or so to make the unlocktool for it. But if you turn it off in itunes you can stay at 1.1.4 forever. I backup with itunes at least 4times a week. No problem. My wife is still on 1.1.2. ( with her iphone that is, comon you guys. Herself is at the leatest software ;-) ) And she also updates her contacts and stuff with no problems. You dont HAVE to update.

There are plenty of forums out there that tells you everything you want to know. Or email me

The shipping took about 10 days if I remember correctly.

I found another link to the same website but this link offers it cheaper because the sim card is offered for free.

http://www.icqsim.com/

I went through the checkout process and the price is 10 + 5 for shipping or 25 with free shipping.

Just remember, after you unlock it, it does work with any carrier that uses the GSM system. So it would still not work with Sprint and Verizon in the States. I've heard of a few people that did unlock their iPhones and wanted touse Verizon. No can do...

I used Ziphone to jailbreak mine and it unlocks as well, easy as 1,2,3...

You might be better off buying sim cards when you get to where you're going...I don't know. Just a thought since it might be easier and you won't have to wait. I'm not sure about the price difference, if any.

Rob,

I was with Verizon, and was very happy with the network, but did the switch and I don't regret it for a split second! The iPhone is just light years ahead of anything I have ever used. And by now, with the extra revenue ATT is enjoying, I think they are bettering their network. Welcome to the new millennium!!!

i've been hacking mine since before 1.1.2 and it so easy now a 5th grader can do it. A lot of people have had problems with Ziphone... I use Independence and the only real issue i've had is having to reboot once the iphone has not gotten a signal for a while it will get stuck in the No Sim status and you will have to reboot. Not reset, just a boot.

I'm also using a dual sim adapter to hold my LA Sim and my ATL Sim. Can set to auto switch where it will switch Sims every few minutes or just do it manually. This way I don't have to carry two phones. Downside is that you have to cut up your sim cards to get them to fit...

Hey Guys,

GREAT info!! Thanks v. much. Keep it coming.

Off Brad's suggestion, I tend to agree that it's maybe a little more reliable and perhaps quicker to just buy a pay-as-you-go Sim at the local airport of wherever you land. But I've also had it like in Italy where it was a bit more of a hastle, where I had to have a local address and all kinds of government type regulations involved w/ purchasing a local sim.

Anyway, like I said good stuff. Thanks again to all.

Will
