Canatrans is the way to go. Modulus, what is that? :-)

The Canatrans worked very well for me for the last couple of years...

Emery was always very reliable in delivery and service and you can just ring him and he will send you one out. Period.

The Modulus 4000 is as of now still vapor ware... Only a handfull have ever seen the prototype unit in person. The Modulus 3000 has not been build for what? 3 or 4 years now. Costumer service seams as frequent as if "do they feel like working today or not, most of the time not"... Parts have almost totally disappeared...

It's your call, it's your money... read the archives.

Enough said.

I have a modulus 3000 i picked up used. It works well I won't tell someone looking at one not to get it. But their support and service has always been lacking.

I've heard nothing but good things about the quality and service you get with a Canatrans.

If your going for pricing Check out crampedattic . David up there in Vancouver gives great customer service and has a nice transmitter he sells for a nice price. I also believe he'll service modulus systems.

Working in the States it may actually be better to go with a system from Canada. After the 2009 fcc law changes purchasing a uhf/vhf transmitter in/from the US may become very difficult.

I will second the Cramped Attic transmitter, it's a plug and play replacement for the Modulus with a more modern design.

I haven't used the Canatrans but while it has its fans, many people seem to feel that their transmission is no better than it used to be with the Modulus but at a much higher price tag. Certainly it has more features (adjustable output is a nice thing to have) but the bottom line is the picture, which should be twice as good to justify approaching twice as expensive.

I third the Cramped Attic transmitter. A very nice substitute for the Modulus. My current show we were using the Modulus and switched because the Modulus was zapping out the Panatape. No problems what so ever with interference on the Panatape and a clean picture back to the village. Nice product and a simple plug and play replacement.

Tx range comparison: MiniSpy, Moduls, Canatrans, Dynawave:

Here?s our impression:

Power out ? measured with Bird meter ? no input Walk test range on clear channel Use Tx antennae Price US $

Vancouver Dynawave .13-.15 100 ft Non-USA ½ wave 10? 2 K

Moduls 3ooo .2-.4 120 ft Non-USA ½ wave 10? Unavailable

Moduls 3ooo vers: 2008 .18 - .2 100 ft Non-USA 2200.00

Toronto Canatrans 1W setting .42-.65 140 ft Non-USA Manufacturers 8? 4 K

MiniSpy .3 280 ft Part 97 in USA Commercial duck 750.00

Modulus 4ooo Unavailable LALA land Vapor ware

The range is a direct reflection of power out. What trumps everything is a clean channel. You get 3x the range on a clean channel.

If you use a channel with a digital commercial HD TV transmitter 30 miles away on it, range is cut in half. There is no way to tell if a digital TV Tx is on an analog channel with an analog tuner. The license info on various databases is revealing. A walk test tells most.

The MiniSpy is better than anything else because it?s designed for one clean channel only: CATV59=434MHz. It is fine for Part 97 and experimentation and donation in the USA, not to be used commercially.

None of the other brands are to be used in the USA. Our tests were done in northern Mexico. Of course with the planned acceleration of global warming most of Ca. is gonna be ?off shore ? soon enough.

2008 version of the 3000 is available for non USA customers.
