Fllying a 535 for the 1st time!!

Hey guys,

 

 

So.....I'll be flying a 535 for the 1st time and know that many of you know all the tricks to getting that beast to work.

 

I have a 3A.... will it exceed that amount of weight it can take? How is it in terms of balancing? Okay to fly in low mode? .....any other tips would help too!

I assume you mean 535B (if not, then run away.... the 535A, if you can find one, IS NOT a Steadicam camera).

 

Search the archives and you'll find more, but here's a few quick notes:

 

Make sure you have the 100 percent video top (AKA Steadicam Top).

Clip on matte box

Steadicam Mags

 

With these toys, you should be able to get it onto a 3a arm. The camera is a little tall, not very long, and a bit heavy so it is like flying a meatball. Overall, it flies well - just a bit on the heavy side.

 

IMPORTANT - this camera draws a decent amount of amperage so you'll need a reliable source for 24 Volts. If you are also using a 3a sled, you will want a second battery jumping you to 24 Volts. Some converters will work, but the 535B is a bit tricky so you'll need a very efficient converter. Power cable is the standard Arri 24 Volt Fisher. Run/Stop is the standard little 3 pin fisher.

 

As with other Arri cameras, the mirror can make mounting motors from the bottom annoying. Another reason to insist on the low mode bracket so you can mount your motors from it. Otherwise, the camera can accommodate either a Square-to-round-rod (Jerry Hill) off the Rosette using Jerry's adapter or you can use a Hill Rod from the shoe that accommodates Jerry's "Arri Iris Clamp" (http://www.steadimoves.com/parts.html).

 

You won't want to run with this camera either. There are much better choices to fly in this day and age, but this camera is doable.

My bread and butter. My set up as I fly it daily is 60 Lbs. (Rig, MDR, 2 batts, Camera, Super Speeds, one Motor, canatrans). This one was quite heavier with the Hawks, Camtec does not carry Lowmode brackets for that camera.
