Premium Members mark morgan Posted May 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 14, 2008 i do this by the feel of the shot when to boom the arm or tilt the sled, looking for some other opinions on this subject camera operators are usually very artistic individuals so i would like to hear some of you guys other thoughts on this subject thanks
Premium Members Kris Torch Wilson Posted May 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 14, 2008 Aloha Mark, I almost always boom up or down if it is a quick repo. If I have a second I will use my fancy motorized top stage to trim for an effortless tilt. Of course your more primitive Sachtler probably doesn't have this feature so you can only dream about such precision. :P Torch

Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted May 14, 2008 Moderators Report Share Posted May 14, 2008 It really depends on the shot. What angle do you want to be to your subject? Is it a point of view? If so, what is their relationship to the subject? If you're holding an over the shoulder and the foreground person is sitting while the other person stands, you'll tilt, but if your foreground person then stands, you'll boom and tilt What about the background? How does it change when you tilt versus boom? I'll frequently do both. One of the best attributes of the newer generation arms is the lack of effort it takes to maintain a boom height. This has greatly opened up the possibilities for me. With my 3a arm, I tilted as much as I could and tried to keep the arm neutral except for brief portions of a shot (I'd also change my arm post a lot to accommodate various camera heights for the "base" of the shot). Premium Members Kris Torch Wilson Posted May 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 14, 2008 Erwin, Of course I am biased. And I've seen your rig. It's OK, but I like your cart! Not as much as Starling's. Yellow is so much sexier than red. Torch "my tongue is in my cheek so I'm not about to shut up" Wilson
