SanderMuller
my fellow newbies (and "veterans" also ofcourse) lets see if you can find the really really important thing on the second and sixth picture in this serie. These are pictures from a new britney spears video. test yourself and if you can only look at the steadicam op and his equipment, you will know it is your thing to do. (dont be distracted..!) http://www.neptuners.com/spy-pics-of-britn...-musicmovie.htm (dont take this to serious..offcourse) B) greetings Sander Muller Rotterdam, The Netherlands Steadicam enthousiast
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted July 15, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 15, 2004 The operator appears to be using the new "invisible" gimbal--extraordinarily low coefficient of friction due to complete lack of mass...! Premium Members WillArnot Posted July 16, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 16, 2004 That is me. And that job sucked ass. It never ceases to amaze me. Big budget, big stars, big director (Dave Meyers), and they still cry poverty, and things are run with about the same coordination as a student film. Got top rate in the end. Duhhh. Is Mr. Papert's answer correct? Call me gullible and slow on the uptake. I'm glad there is humour in hindsight b/c I was there and I wasn't smiling. That shot being the quintessential boner. "We want the camera right on the deck following the TV she is dragging, then when she gets to the fence we want to boom up and over her arm to see the basketball game she has stopped to look at." So the super post wouldn't have helped obviously hindering the high end of the shot. So with the regular XCS post stretched to about 32" and my DSD harness w/ the 2" drop down set at it's lowest, I could get the base of the camera about 4" off the deck...acceptable. The difficult part was then getting high enough at the end of the shot, which meant floating an apple box in right next to Brittany as she stops at the fence... and I boom up over the TV, frame out the in-coming box and the Key Grip (my old Best Boy from 10 yrs ago! Ironic) as they are floated in... boom down as I step over the TV and onto the box and continue the boom up over the fence and her arm, all in one smooth move. No rehearsals (gee what a surprise), light is fading, the grip truck is already packed (hence no apple boxes - grab the lens case (see last pic)- Guess my staging strategies never fully sunk in... <_<) and got it on the 3rd take. Those two pics are wierd moments in between takes when I'm walking backwards to set up behind the TV (#6) not looking at her ass thank you but the TV, and then doing I don't know what in the #2 pic. And let me tell you. What a let down she was. Can't sing, can't dance, chain smokes and drinks Red Bull all the time, so her skin is horrible and she's loaded with tons of foundation makeup like a grandmother!! Sorry to burst you bubbles. But it really epitomizes how as much as I love what I do, it's very often just a job. So especially on a job like this, firstly it's my responsibility not to be "dazzled" by the star factor or some bullshit lie from the UPM, and to make sure I get my rate and establish and maintain that in the name of all operators. That was $150 / hr for me and $1000.00 for the gear. My only concession, negotiated by my wonderful agent Russell Todd, was to go from a 10 hour guarantee to a 12 hour guarantee. Secondly, I listen to the DP and Director and stay focused on the job even when I'm not working. I'm not chatting up extras and being a distraction, I'm getting top rate, so I Act as If... I play that part so they respect me and the role I play and they realize that it is worth it to have me there instead of the guy who will do it for less. And above all Get the Shots. Yes that does have to be the guarantee at the end of the day. That you can deliver with confidence. No fuss. No mess. Then you get into that top end. Even if you do have to put on your Wellington boots because the bullshit is awefully thick sometimes!! Completely re-inforced the reasoning as to why I do about 1 music video every 18 months. And that was the video that she twisted her knee on that night. I was only on for that first day, so I don't even know if they finished shooting it. In all fairness to Brittany tho, I did feel quite sorry for her. She seems to be very young and lost (without Justin??) and just wants to be taken care of. The knee thing, although real(she cancelled her summer tour), was more like a cry for help. Wierd.

SanderMuller
Will i hope you don't take this post as an offensive thing. If so i want you to know that it wasnt meant to be. Maybe i have to be more specific next time. Somebody e-mailed me this link and said to me.. he look at that i have new pictures of the new britney video.. so i checked it out. The first thing that struck me was.. HELLO THERE, a steadicam operator...! So i dont know if it is my flaw or that i am just horny for steadicam.. hahaha In my opinion a good operator (or any kind of job) will never be distracted.... All the best....
