Premium Members Morgan Lowndes Posted August 12, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 12, 2008 just wondered how much power 1 moderator has? have seen a few other forums where there is much discussion and wondered if 1 "moderator" can actually have a lot of control... just trying to figure how much power of speech is really available on t'interweb... best morgs
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted August 13, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 13, 2008 The moderators here have far less power than you might think. They can delete some posts, and do in the case of spam, but other than that, they're relatively hands-off. Are you asking if the discussions are somehow censored to only allow certain types of comments? I know for certain none of that takes place on this forum; perhaps on others. If someone owns and runs a web site, I suppose they have the right to show and not show whatever they want.
Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted August 13, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 13, 2008 It totally depends on the site. I am an administrator (and before that a moderator) on this video game site: http://agesanctuary.com With admin power, I can actually change the site, close it down, move all the forums, ban forum members and their IP's from the site, I'm basically god. As a moderator, I can delete posts, warn or suspend posting rights of members, move posts into other forums, ect. But it depends on the site. That particular site has a lot of video game playing kids on it and it requires a fair amount of moderation, a site like this for example requires very little by comparison. That site has about 5 admins and 15 moderators but it has thousands (actually 40+ thousand) members too. When I was doing the job of the active admin, I would spend and hour or two per day just on administrative tasks to keep the site running and that's with at least 6 or 7 active staff members doing as much work. So the short answer is, it varies, a lot.

How do you have time to play games, admin that site and do your work, Mike? Or is there some breakthrough in cloning we dont know about? :)

Hi Afton, On the whole the moderators here do a great job ensuring spam is kept out and and that posts are placed in the correct sections etc. but I'm afraid there is one that is very heavy handed when it comes to censorship on this site. I have the proof and copies of many emails that he has sent numorous members of this site threatening to ban them permanently for disagreeing with him. I think you need to read the posts on the other forum to fully understand the extent that this person upsets people on various forums thoughout the web. Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted August 13, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 13, 2008 @Niall........ yes for the last 5 years or so other admins have been doing my job and I'm just there in sort of a super star capacity (kind of like the Paris Hilton of video games, I dont really do anything, just look good). I was at one time #26 in the world at age of mythology, titans expansion. I wonder if I should add that to my resume? As for this site, I don't think I've ever seen anything that needed to be deleted? A bunch of duded talking about a piece of specialty camera equipment  not very risque.................... I was at the I34 Gaming LAN in the UK this weekend. If you want to see hardcore gamers that is the place. Was hard work with a camera, 5 days of 16hour days (im not the fittest person in the world) Biggest problem, after about day 2-3, for some players hygiene takes a holiday! And yes, add it to your resume. It shows your in touch with the hip and happening gaming crowd! :D
