Live gig...help wanted!!

Hi all I have a live gig comming up...very short notice...tomorrow`s prep already :blink:

 

it`s with Thomson GrasValley (?) TV cameras and canon wide angle optic

 

i have an old J7 trying to get shematics for it because the last time i wanted to use it i could zoom in but when i released the rocker it would zoom out by itsself agian...

 

i also whant to order jim bartell`s gimbal focus controller to have the option to pull my own focus in case the assistant (i don`t know him yet) can`t do it propperly

 

but here`s the question now how can i get the return signal (what the other cameras do) on my monitor best would be switchable with my own signal of course any connectors pinouts?

The Thomson GrasValley is a great camera to fly, you will be happy with it. There is no return video in that camera, as the signal goes only one way.

What i always do is use my own transmitter to transmit the return signal to my second monitor on my sled. ( can be a small monitor with reviever in it, i use a small casio )

I love to go close, and i love zooming. Most of the time i use a 21x lens, so pulling my own focus isnt ideal. I do use a focuspuller ( same one for the last 3 years, so he know me very good )

We also have our own intercom system. My focuspuller has a small mixer, and he mix his own voice and the director to my inear set. He is not only pulling focus, but also tells me the next shot i have to do. ( as the show is scripted of course )

He then can read me the script, very handy.Most of the time he pulls the focus from behind a monitor, as the stage isnt the place for him. There you can put your transmitter, so its closer to you.

don`t know yet but they have various intercoms on the truck i`ll get a wireless one

also the return thing should be solved i`ll mount the zoom controller with the return button (camera is on triax)

on my gimbal. so i don`t need my old misbehaving J7 either and they said they even have a triax adapter cable on their truck

but hey i beleive it when i see it... ;)

Your on triax :blink: In that case the return would just work fine. Just ask them to put vieuwfinder onto the camera output.

Sorry, i was under the impression you got the wireless thompson, as in my opinion its the only way to do steadicam.

I know but the wireless is not in the budget...let`s see and hope the best...i just helping out for somebody

Hey Sebastian,

Your on Triax with that camera, and return video spits out of the back of the camera via the prompter BNC, You can fly a separate 3.5" or 4" monitor for that just under or below your existing monitor. As for the tally it's about $3.00 US for the parts to make one it's just a 2 wire cable a 9 volt battery, a light sensor and an Red LED . . .I ran mine through the rig with a 12v LED and it just plugs in on the top stage.

 

As for the Triax adapter you should just use a Trico, Triax to BNC adapter male and female, the truck should have those if you can't get one and then you can just use a small BNC between you and the rig

thanks man everything should be fine i get a zoomcontoller with a switch between my signal and the program

and i have a tally ;-)

 

and they said they had a triax adapter cable :-)

 

and a wireless intercom :-)

 

but no wireless camera :-(

 

i just hope someone gets the focus right :-0

If you have a problem getting your J-7 fixed quickly, you may want to consider this item I bought from B&H photo-video.

It has an optional 8 to 12 pin adaptor.

 

I'm in Beijing on the Olympics using it with Thomson Grass Valley 8000 cameras and it's absolutely great. It mounts easily on my Master's gimbal and the cable induces only minor balance issues. Plus at $230 + adaptor @ $90 I think, the price is right.

Norbert. Totally jealous of your gig. would love to do at least one Olympics.

 

Are you pulling your own focus? Do you have an AC? Or are your focal lengths such that you set it and forget it?

It's been interesting to say the least. Their paying a lot of money for not a lot of shots in my opinion but who am I to complain. We spend more days doing tech checks and rehearsing than actual event days/hour.

 

The worst day was the mens cycling where it rained all day, we all got wet and my toes ended up looking like 20 bleached prunes when I got my shoes off back at the hotel.

 

But I'd do it all again in London I hope for 2012.

 

I work my own focus and how depends on the shot. For most wide angle shots I preset it at 2 meters, making sure the ND filter wheel's set so that I have at least F8 and that gives plenty of DOF. For the longer lens stuff e.g. the award ceremonies where I can't get in the way of the stills guys, I use my gimbal mounted Libec zoom controller to quickly rack in, check focus then reset the frame. When on air, I then can do the push with no worries.
