Hi all,

I have job this weekend using the Red camera for the first time. I own a one channel preston unit, PFIU, which is generally powered from the camera itself. In the past it has worked great. Panavision, Arri, Sony Cameras etc. However, now that i am using the Red, will I have to power the PFIU from the sled itself or is there a Preston cable that powers the PFIU from the Red. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Can't remember if the RED battery holder has a P-tap on it, you have one of those cables...?

Otherwise, Jeroen at Lexmond (818-384-4323) or Terry West (310-374-5711) will be able to make you the cable you need. Incidentally I just got the single-channel run cable for the RED made.

yes there is a p tap on the red but its a little quarky

might even shut the red down or possibly not even let it fire up

its a shooting match in my past experience

sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't

The P-tap will power the MDR just fine as the power is drown directly from the battery... but you might need that place to power your Downconverter.

Are you talking about the V+F Lens control?

That one is usually powered from the Camera via the Run cable.

But you have a separate power in, that over rides the run cable... get a AB cable made, actually I think that Preston has that cable on the shelf. I just picked on up for the MDR-2 box.

I powered the AJA and the Canatrans in the past from the P-tap using a P-tap breakout box... The only problem is that the P-tap on the box can be forced into the plug with the polarity reversed... which will trip the thermo fuse... the DP/owner had a little hart attack, but the camera worked fine after a couple of minutes...

Hope that helps,

Erwin

And yes Charles, I bought the run cable for the RED as well...

Hey Erwin, does the RED camera cable power the MDR2? I haven't tried this because I always have the MDR powered off the sled. If in studio mode, I usually use the P-Tap also.

That would be a no...

I was told again and again to not power anything non RED from the camera body. Meaning plug in your viewfinder and onboard monitor but that's about it. I was told that the body can't handle it, so the accessory plugs on the back are worthless. Any kind of power spikes are rewarded with a shutdown...

So much for professional gear,

Erwin
