JVC HD110 on Flyer - IDX D-Tap power questions

This could be simple. Can anyone share their experience on this situation please.

 

Camera:

- JVC HD110

- IDX V Type Plate installed (converts 14 to 7.2 volts)

- (FYI: Camera operates 7.2 volts thro AC adapter)

 

Steadicam:

- Flyer with IDX V Type

 

Questions:

- I would like to draw power frm the sled IDX batteries and power the camera.

- In future, may want to power a small Transmitter (say 12 to 14 volts) frm sled IDX

 

Current plan:

- Buy two D-Tap connectors and run frm sled battery to the IDX plate behind the camera. I think the IDX plate can not only send power out, but also can receive power thro the D-Tap. Perhaps there is no circuitry (diodes and such). This way, I can send power frm Sled to the V plate on the back of the camera. The plate will end up doing he conversion of 14 to 7.2 volts.

 

I did find some D-Tap cable (FS-CABLE-KIT). Is there something similar that I can buy or build easily?

 

- Also, at some point, I do want to see other easy ways to power any simple transmitter (12 to 14 volts) frm the sled.

 

Are there any simple solutions for my questions?

Why not use the power out connector on the rear of the camera stage? That's what it's for--the wiring in the Flyer may not be heavy enough gauge to power the hungrier video cameras but it should be adequate for the JVC, especially with the downconversion. You should have a 2-pin Lemo to 4 pin XLR that came with the Flyer which is a good starting point. You can then make a male XLR to p-tap cable, pretty inexpensive and easy to make yourself.

 

However, that JVC adaptor plate is a little mysterious, I wouldn't be positive that you can power the plate through the P-tap as it does have circuitry inside to perform the downconversion. If you wanted to test this out before making a cable, you can do it just with bare wires from the XLR cable to the p-tap connector, just obviously be super-careful about polarity. Pin 4 of the XLR is hot and 1 is ground, but unfortunately I can't tell you the polarity of the p-tap. You can test it yourself with a battery mounted on the plate as output voltage.

Can the Flyer not handle the weight of the camera with battery and accessories? If it can then I would just throw a battery on the camera under most circumstances. Its a light enough camera that a little extra weight doesn't really hurt.

 

I am sure any of the guys who make custom steadicam cables could make up a lemo to d-tap cable for you but I would want to test out that it is going to work first.
