i think i am the only brotha thats in the steadicam guild. :D what do you think dave?

Hmmm,

I think that if your claim goes undisputed and you are the only one, that's one tear in the bucket. If there is one more, let's take it to the stage. Through understanding, we create. And by creating boundaries, we now know what precedents need breaking. It's good to know that there is no real prejudice in our arena (as far as I know), but what about the other side of that deal memo?

P.S. I know I should search this but, how does one become a member of the Guild and is it a good idea?

Well I didn't think this was going to be a big ordeal but it's nice to know that there is no quames in Our art form which is what I expected cause we're all in the game.

As David said what are the perks of being in the Guild or being apart of the SOA.

In 1994, when I did my first workshop in Rockport, we were visited by Papa Bear, who´s real name I forgot. But he was one of the people at Cinema Products that was involved in the making of the Steadicam. He was black and his son, who´s name I also forgot (sorry, I´m terrible with names) was an operator. Though he wanted to be an actor or a musician too and I think that´s what he did.

People with real knowledge of that era will know who I mean.

I do believe you are correct Marc!

Mr. Ellis: There is a $150 one time registration to join the SOA. Your name and info will be put into a searchable database. Someone wanting to hire a Steadicam operator can search by location, name, or experience.

There is currently no charge to join the Steadicam Guild. We do have minimum requirements though. (goto the guild website for more info)

The perks of being a member of the Steadicam Guild is that we have monthly gatherings in L.A. where you get to talk to members at all levels. We have demos at rental houses, steadicam swap meets, we'll watch members demo reels and critique them. We discuss the business side as well as the artisitic side of steadicam. Just recently we had a joint meeting with the Digital Cinema Society at Clairmont. We discussed the problems that we have as Steadicam operators when shooting with HD cameras. Both Clairmont and Thompson (ViperFilm stream) are both modifying their cameras so they are more steadicam friendly. I suspect we will have another one of these meetings in the near future to see how they are coming along and we'll have a full demos with steadicam. Should be interesting.

If you are a member in another part of the country or world and want to have a gathering there, I will be more than happy to put that information on the Steadicam Guild web site under the calendar section.

If you would like to join the Steadicam Guild, there is an application form on the Steadicam Guild web site. Just follow the instructions.

If you have questions about membership or other Guild questions, please contact Dan Kneece. Dan's email address is on the web site under "ABOUT THE GUILD"

the steadicam guild franchise is a great thing to have. if we can get more of them started in different regions across the country, i feel that would give up Ops some kind of support and 'power' when it comes to productions trying to nickle and dime us so they can pay more to the actors, etc...

strength is in numbers. the more to jump on board the better the Guild will become....

I agree but the only thing about that is when it come to certain markets or there are maybe a handful of Ops in the area (Not speaking from experience or anything  ) How would that come to be.

I would love to have a Rep from the Guild to come down or to see how many Ops are in THIS area but the only thing about it is as far as I know I'M IT unless there are some in hiding, or sanction a particular region from the mid west to A to H, that would be concidered one and so on dot, dot, dot if that is or was possible.

thats it.. since you ARE it you CAN be the spearhead of the local chapter up there in cincy.

there are a few ops here in atl but only one has contacted me. the others AFAIK dont even contribute here (or do so very scarcely).

think of it as a fraternity. there are so many in different parts of the country, and in almost every city. the Guild could become that if we had the Ops in the same city/locale to come together and form it... ;)

AFAIK is InternetSpeak for " As Far As I Know "

Simiarly, IMHO is In My Humble Opinion, FWIW is For What It's Worth, IIRC is If I Recall Correctly, YMMV is Your Mileage May Vary and of course, TGIFS is This Gimbal Is For Shit. :P

David, I am sooooo sorry we never hooked up post-workshop. That week went from bad to worse, thank god you found Alec- who is without doubt a great fellow and possessed of more goddamned great gear than I've eve seen in one place besides perhaps Ted Churchill's apartment. We're gonna take care of you, Dave. We're going to nurture you along. Guide you. Advise you. Help you. Support you. Then of course, when you're just a few precious days from your first huge live t.v. show, kneecap you with an iron pipe to bring some humility into the picture.

As for Chuck and Travis Jackson, they were two great folks. Adam Keith has a great tale about meeting Chuck and Travis. Adam?.....
