My application is for a producer in the field and also for my soundguy so he can keep in close with the mic. The old handheld I have which has the little bar that scans the UHF channels just doesnt focus in on the transmission from my Modulus very well. I remember seeing a posting somewhere that gave specific model numbers but can't remember where I saw it. Hope you might be able to help. Thanks in advance... Premium Members Ari Gertler Posted August 10, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 10, 2004 I have been using 2 Casio EV-4500 on the set for DP's and Directors for about two years now. It has a 4" color LCD screen, very small, light weight, and a telescopic antenna that is not usually needed in the exteded form (the signal from my Mod. is just fine). The Hoodman H400 is a perfect fit for exterior day shoots. People have been very impressed. The screen is the same size as the Sony clamshel, and the Casio is so much smaller, it is easier to handle. I bought mine at Best Buy for around $200. and I purches the extended warranty for three years for less than $20 (I thought for sure that they would have been damaged by now, but they are holding up great). Now the bad news. It takes 4 AA batteries. I went through a lot of AA's untill I realized that the reachargable batteries are more cost effective, and much better for the environment. The really annoying aspect is that everytime that the unit is turned off, it looses it hold of the channel, and then you have to set it back on the correct channel (I show the AC's how to do this because we all know that the Directors and DP's will not like waisting the few seconds to get it back on track). I now have 24 AA's in order to always have fully charged batteries and we usually never turn off the units except for extended breaks (this takes care of the changing channel issue). mattmarek Posted August 10, 2004 Report Share Posted August 10, 2004 those casios are decent. the sony clamshell/tuner combo is the best i've come across. i don't have one, but i did buy a backup lcd monitor from wolf seeburg. it has a built in t.v tuner which i've used in a pinch a few times. not as handy as a clamshell or casio with the power, but you can plug it in at the directors tv land or make make a cable to np1 slot. I'm also sick of always having to explain how to reset to the right channel if they turn it off and back on. Just to be clear, if I set it to channel 34 will it stay on channel 34 after I turn it off and back on? I know there are one or two out there that do that. If I had one of these Casio 4:3 handheld monitors, would it show the entire 16:9 with letterbox (doubtful) or a cropped image? Premium Members Afton Grant Posted February 14, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 14, 2008 A Modulus will only transmit and receive standard def NTSC (or PAL) video. By definition, NTSC is 4:3. It is impossible to feed a 16:9 image to a Modulus. Your camera may be capturing 16:9 natively, but if either it or a downconverter is sending a signal to an NTSC monitor or Modulus, that signal is not 16:9. Most likely the captured 16:9 image will be squished into the 4:3 NTSC frame, and any monitor receiving it can un-squish it if it has an aspect ratio toggle.
