Does anyone in LA have a geared head laying around and if so, would you be willing to let me borrow it to practice with this weekend? Gotta job coming up with one so.. need the practice.

Or is there anyone in the LA area looking to practice the wheels at a rental house perhaps, with a real person, I'd be up for that Today as well..

If so, give me a call 323-385-3456

David,

Claremont has always been really cool about practicing in their prep-bays. It's better to do it there because you'll get a camera body + a set of lenses -- and there's lots of people walking around to annoy...I mean follow.

forgot to mention a back-up if you can't get to a rental house...just stop by a Toys R Us and get an Etch-A-Sketch.

I heard this mentioned at the 24P pedestal workshop I took about a month ago. They had a gear head there too which I practiced a lot on. I thought they were joking. I just might have to goto toys r us. Ahh, to be a kid again

Years ago I had seriously considered having tiny little cranks made for an EtchaSketch to really duplicate the action of the geared head so I could practice at home; thankfully the universe kept me from geeking out that far. But yet, it's not a bad idea. Actually, someone should have come up with a virtual-reality-esque video game interface which throws a serious of operating challenges at you, "I just made it to level 4, standups and sitdowns!" "Dude, level 6 is all Technocrane, that's the shiznit!"

Level 7 would be the Steadicam level? I invision JUST the gimble hooked up to a playstation. It would have some resistance as it would if there were a sled and camera on it. Garrett's voice is of course on this level. "Level out! level out! Now go into Don Juan. Now preceed the actor up the stairs... end frame was garbage. GAME OVER!"

This would be the end of the Steadicam workshops as we know it. doh!

<<end frame was garbage.>>

I can't remember where I left my keys this morning, but I'll probably remember that darn National Geographic documentary word-for-word for the rest of my life...the actual verbiage was "you've ended up here with a garbage frame".

(embarassingly, I really DID forgot that we had to valet park at the studio parking garage this morning, and spent an hour going through all my gear and ransacking the stage trying to find my keys at the end of the day before it all made sense. Ugh)
