hi all, what are some of the best excersizes (if any) that you use to keep your back and legs and body in shape? im looking for some alternatives as i am bored of my current gym routine! anything helps! thanks in advance!

 

One of the most complete exersize is swimming pool....

Forget the gym, Boring . . .

 

Get out, there's way too much to do outside the gym. I play Ice Hockey, go Mountain Biking and go skiing. As a matter of fact I drop my gear off at the gig and then ride my bicycle into work every day until the gig is over then pick my gear up in my little smarty.

The gym can be boring. It is however convenient if one's schedule doesn't allow for team sports, or if snow/ice in winter prevents one from cycling as Rob suggests.

In my experience, the best resistance training exercises for steadicam operation are:

Squats (either olympic or sumo style)

Lunges

Hyperextensions (like a reverse sit-up)

As many abdominal exercises as you can handle.

Cardio Cardio Cardio.

 

Remember, it's not about how much weight you lift....rather precise technique!

 

When I first began operating steadicam with a Master's Harness...I created a gym routine focused around the above exercises and after a few months was noticing a big difference while in the rig.

A lot of cardio with the jump rope would give you a great timing and endurance ,

I work a lot abs , if you have strong abs you will have a strong back as well ...

only when I am not working I do lower back ...

and don`t forget your calvs are extremely important for balance ...

Almost nightly I go through the same regime. I call it the Shaker Workout. Pour 2 oz of Stoli in shaker, add a touch of Vermouth and a splash of olive juice, 4 ice cubes and shake for at least 2 minutes. Consume at a leisurely pace. My forearms are in great shape. Remember when you look down, that is not a Beer Belly, it's the fuel tank to a love machine.

haha, thanks for the input from everyone, i definitely have some new ideas and things to try from your posts.

rob, that is really impressive that you ride your bike to work! im going to have to give it a try!:) and how do you fit everything into a smart car?

I share with Mike that martial art is one of the best excercise for your body and brain.

But there is something to be said for remaining out of shape for Steadicam work.

 

I did a gig for a local company after having not done one for over a month. It was a warm day and I was out of practice (and out of shape as usual) and was wearing a black t-shirt. I was sweating like a race horse the whole day, wiping my forehead with a hankie. The director comes up and asks me if I need a break. I say "Sure, if we have the time." I put my rig on the stand and take 5 while they reset lights and what not. I'm actually feeling OK but the director keeps insisting that I take breaks. I'm actually feeling kind of guilty. In this small market it is quite common to do a little bit of everything on set, so taking a break while everyone else is busting their tails is unusual.

 

Anyway, this goes on all day until we finally wrap. As we are doing the end of project photo shoot I overhear the client say to the director, "I have never seen someone work so hard on a set as your camera operator did today." I nod my head in acknowledgment and wipe my brow with the hankie but inside I am laughing. I guess if sweating is counted as working hard I am busting my butt. :P
