Is there something new in this subject. as far as I know, the only way is to use aja downconvert and composite video transmitter... do you know about good light video transmitter that works sdi or hdmi? Glik. Glik- The Meridian video transmitter from the BOXX is just what you're looking for. It transmits uncompressed HD-SDI, SD-SDI, component or composite video (basically all standard and HD flavors of video) with no delay (less than 1 ms or less than 1/40th of a frame). It transmits to a dedicated receiver via a Wi-fi like signal on license-free 5.4 GHZ channels. The range is from 200-450ft or more depending on the antennae used. The picture is absolutely flawless - no break-up, ghosting, etc. The transmitter is about 6.5"x3x1.5 and weighs about 6oz. It accepts a wide power input range of 7-30volts and draws about 9watts. In one word it is awesome. I will be repping/selling these units and should have a bunch in stock near the end of February. Perhaps the ONLY drawback, price. I will have a final price soon and it will vary slightly due to foreign exchange prices, but expect between $7,000-8000 for a Transmitter and Receiver pair. I know this sounds pricey, but compare it to a Modulus 3000/4000 transmitter at $2,200 and a receiver w/ antennae at about $3,300 and this for a standard def-composite video transmitter that produces OK video with constant interference. OK enough of a sales pitch. Hey, I'm an excited Steadicam Operator and I think this is a ground breaking product for all of us. It finally breaks that barrier where everyone a the monitor hated watching Steadicam shots with all that interference or would ask you to use a hardwire. Everyone is raving about the Wevi (IDX), but it seems the Boxx is smaller (most notably, not as wide), a lot lighter, and is offered without battery mounts so we can just butter with Velcro and place at our discretion (versus sandwiching between battery plates). Moreover, the Boxx accepts composite SD (versus SD-SDI) so we could use it with film cameras easily too. I had pretty much decided not to purchase a Wevi until they did all of these things so..... how good is the Boxx? Is the image color accurate, etc? Will the DP be as happy as a hard wired image on HD jobs? Could a DIT use the image to paint with (I've been talking to a NY DIT who says he could make his paint box controls wireless with ease and that the Wevi has the image quality he is after). Premium Members Charles Papert Posted February 9, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 9, 2009 I've been talking to the BOXX folks since Cinegear last year and it appears that it will deliver similar results to the IDX unit picture-wise, plus the added advantages that Alec lists. However the real test will come once the unit ships and we are able to do a head-to-head test to determine which has the better range, freedom from interference etc. With a digital transmitter of this type you get a rock-solid picture until it loses enough signal and then it blanks out; the question is how far from the receiver and in what type of environment will this happen earlier with one unit vs the other. I believe Panavision has tested both units (obviously a pre-release of the BOXX unit--let's not go all "RED" here and talk about it like it is available yet) and the result was that the BOXX unit fell short of the IDX, but this was a while back and hopefully things will have changed with the production model. BOXX is also planning a more serious antennae array that I don't expect any of us will be buying due to cost but could be rented for a specialized shot that covers a lot of territory. It looks sort of like the masts that the sound guys sometimes use with a bunch of mean-looking yagis. I'm excited to try out that unit in particular--I've had good results with the IDX unit but the form factor and flexibility of the BOXX will be much more welcome, plus the ability to use on an SD set. I've done some extensive testing with the IDX kit. It performs very well, even in sub-zero temperatures. As stated elsewhere, when it does drop out and goes to black, it can take as long as 10 seconds + to pick the signal back up again...not ideal. It also drops out when you get very close to the RX, which is interesting - almost as if there is a minimum distance that the TX should be away from the RX. Aside from this, I've used the link on Steadicam, handheld and even with minicams, and it has performed every time. When The Boxx unit arrives, I'll do a side by side test and will be happy to post my findings here. The biggest selling point for me, aside from the range, HD compatability and stability of signal, is that it also goes SD and composite - so ideal for film and regular video work, in addition to broadcast/live events and HD drama/feature/promo work. It also increases the scope of the kit and attractiveness for hire (and hence hire cost). The bottom line is that we can now offer directors a wireless HD signal with no visible latency. The digital revolution is here and it's time to jump on board. It's only a matter of time before SD is considered "Sub-Standard Definition". As far as I'm concerned, a Zero-Delay Composite, Component, SDSDI and HDSDI transmission unit with a built in Scaler and Down Converter for only a few grand is a steal. The price of a new SD only transmitter/receiver will run you "roughly" the same price. I figure, if you're willing to pay a few thousand dollars on a SD only transmitter/receiver today, it would be worthwhile to spend the extra grand or so to get on top of the technology curve. If you don't have the extra grand-or-so, wait and save! instead of investing into a unit that will be outdated by the time the man in brown shorts drops it off at your doorstep. I'm not downplaying the quality or efficiency of current SD transmitters, but soon it will be insufficient (mainly to the directors, etc.) to transmit to video village in any format less than "HD". Unfortunate.... but inevitable. The unit should begin shipping Late February/Mid March. I've pre-ordered and can't wait to test it. I'll post remarks. Prices below.
