Premium Members Kyle Fasanella Posted February 18, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 18, 2009 Hey guys I have been waiting for the red rock remote focus for some time and can't wait any longer. Looking to purchase a used remote focus. I have used the bartec and loved it. Any ideas where I can get a cheap easy wireless setup. Does not have to be bartec. but hopefully under 3k. thanks! Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted February 18, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 18, 2009 You really aren't going to find anything cheaper than a Bartec thats worth having. If you are willing to spend up to $4k and have a little patience you can usually find a good deal on a used one on here. As far as the Redrock goes I wouldn't hold your breath. I talked to them over a year ago and they said they would contact me as soon as they had a working prototype to come check it out since I lived in Texas at the time and they are located in Texas. They haven't contacted me yet..... If it is ever released I would expect the price to be considerably higher than their origional estimates and still not nearly as good as a bartec. ~Jess

I'd second that. If you're willing to spend 3K, don't skimp out. The Bartech & motor is not that much more (in Steadicam money) and IT WORKS. Buy something a little cheaper & you will end up buying a Bartech later and spending more in the long run.
Moderators Louis Puli SOC Posted February 19, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted February 19, 2009 "You really aren't going to find anything cheaper than a Bartec thats worth having." May I say there is nothing cheap about the Bartec For $5000 (and motor and cables) or $3000 to $4500 2nd hand units . Its fantastic value for money. I have 6 BFD'S what more do I need to say but give Jim a call you will not regret it. Fly sharp Louis Puli B)
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted February 19, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 19, 2009 There should be at least two remote focus systems coming out in the next 6 months that will range from $800-$2000 for a single channel system--it remains to be seen whether they will be worthy competitors to the Bartech but for many users (particular in the 35mm adaptor world), cheap is the most important thing. Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted February 19, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) Which units are you referring to? Are they by any chance ones that claimed they would be out a year ago? It is quite possible that something decent will come out for less, but I feel that there will be a few things holding them back from really being professional quality. Mainly I think the motors they use are going to leave a little to be desired in terms or noise and power. Also reliability and a lack of industry standards making it hard to find replacement parts is going to make having backups even more important. This could easily negate any price differences. Of course I could be wrong about all of this and I frankly wouldn't mind if someone came out with a 3 channel preston equivalent for $500 like Redrock claimed they were going to. ~Jess Edited February 19, 2009 by Jess Haas

Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted February 19, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 19, 2009 Viewfactor website currently says November 6th although they have said all sorts of things in the past and changed their products considerably in that time. It does look interesting once they get all the bugs worked out and create a version that listens to some of the consumer feedback. ~Jess
David Williams
You also have this one http://www.hocusproducts.com/ He's apparently going to be at NAB for another company, but he'll have it under the desk. It's made for budget end setups with 35mm SLR adapters. Apparently under $1000US, but not set yet.
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted February 20, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 20, 2009 And there are the two systems that I had in mind as I was writing that previous post. Note that I said "should be" coming out soon, of course no-one can tell for sure and I am well aware of the delays with the View Factor system. I've had some conversations with those guys about their product and while there are certain design elements that make me scratch my head, there is obviously a market for this sort of thing. To draw a line at "professional" or not is beside the point--there are many "unprofessional" aspects of the RED and various accessories that people are using with it, not to mention the 35mm adaptor market, yet those end-users are delighted with those products. By the same token, these folks will be so blindingly happy that they can turn a knob over here and it turns a motor over there that they won't care about the nuances that we who use the higher-end systems have come to expect. I mention these products not to dissuade anyone from buying a Preston or a Bartech, it's just that there are a ton of people out there who have entered the 35mm arena (via adaptors or RED) and are desperate for remote focus at their idea of an "affordable" price (wasn't that long ago that the Bartech was the steal of the industry and probably still is!) Welcome to the new economy of filmmaking.
