Actioncam Red Edition in lo mode

I have looked at their web site.

 

Not much support information nor do they mention Lo-mode.

 

1) I'd start with Laurie and Jerry's book on Steadicam operation on exactly how to go to low-mode and at the same time I'd talk to your manufacturer.

 

2) If you paid for their unit they should at least have some of the answers.

 

 

I'm not sure who here has one of these.

I believe Actioncam has a way to flip the arm post to go down for low mode and then there is a screw in the gimbal handle that you use to mount it upside down and clamp it on to the post. From what I have heard this doesn't work all that well and a traditional F bracket would probably work better. Then of course you need a low mode bracket for the camera. I don't have an Actioncam Red Edition so I can't really tell you anything else but maybe that will get you started. Talk to the guys over at Actioncam.

I am flying a red. My biggest concern is not breaking anything and doing it right. I have a good idea but wanted to get some thoughts from others.

I’ve got an older Actioncam and I’ve only flown a Red in low mode once… (why didn’t I think to take a photo?) It was very straight forward to set up. The camera had a pistol grip mount that could be fitted into the top front rod mounts. It had a thread that let me fit the snap plate directly to it. I was able to slide the battery mount and pistol grip mount so the plate was centered/balanced above the camera.

Worked surprisingly well.

I use our tilt-able (ActionProducts) low-mode cage for some shots. But for most of the low-mode shots the last years, I have never remounted a camera (neither 35mm or digital) - If I go low-mode, I simply flip the hole rig and re-adjust balance. Then I have them flip the image back in post - saves you lots of time on set. Several times I've had directors say to me there happy I'm doing the job, because I don't take any time to go low-mode. Really, since all footage pass DI these days anyway, it's the fastest way to go. If a the DP is not sure about doing it this way, I just say "I can remount the camera for low-mode, takes about 10min - or, I just filp the hole rig and you filp it back in post, then I'm ready in 30sec" - They always take the 30sec mode:).
