Dave Gish
I go to Five Towns College in Dix Hills NY Ahhh, fooled me. I thought you went to school in Manhattan. Dix Hills NY is 15 minutes away from the Tiffen factory in Hauppage NY, and they've been holding Steadicam 2-day workshops there fairly often. Maybe you can get in on one of those. In fact, if you get 9 people, Peter will make it happen, and you might even get him to come to your school. Cost is $500 per person for the 2-day weekend workshop. Also, here's the name of a guy that rents his V-20 in Manhattan: http://www.wunotwoo.com/rentals.html He's not really a rental company, just making some money on the side, good rates. You can also rent a V-20 from a real rental place if you want. Either way, it would be good to rent before you buy. Anyway, if you want to go over some of the basics of how a steadicam works and what's involved, shoot me an email at davegish AT verizon DOT net and we can exchange phone numbers (much easier than typing). Sam Morgan Moore
Im sure the more experienced operators (Im a newb to steadicam - but a proffessional stills shooter for more than 18 years!) may disagree with me but.. Do you have your own digital video camera or a budget for one? To learn any camera operation the best method is to be able to practice practice practice and evaluate your results 'for free' Steadicam is camera operation on a higher level but still falls into a category of camera operation I would buy a Steadicam Pilot and a camera too - I love the canon 5d By the time you graduate, and move through the business via some corporate, music work and TV work I think you may find film and heavy cameras are almost forgotten - or you will be in a position to rent or buy a rig that can fly film and heavy cameras My experience in learning the steadicam has imporoved my operator skill on sticks and hendheld so much and my experience as a stills shooter has meant I have progressed well (I hope) because I have a years of knowledge of lenses and framing before even touching any camera that shoots moving images at all my experience of workin with 'graduates' of (still) photography is that they just dont have enough time spent just playing and evaluating partly because the colleges are still insist on film S Edited March 28, 2009 by Sam Morgan Moore
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted March 31, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 31, 2009 And please Vincenzo, change your login to your full name. Usually nobody will replay unless you do so, but somehow it slips in the newbie section. Thank you.
Premium Members Brandon Zachary Posted March 31, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 31, 2009 The Flyer should be able to hold an SR2 or 3 depending on lens choice, like super speeds with a Bartech/M-One motor and LMB5 matte box. I've flown a Red on my Flyer (with super speeds and the same accs) and while it almost maxes out the arm it is still workable. Granted you have to power the camera from the sled and get rid of a few luxury items...I'd recommend a bigger rig, but it is possible. Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted March 31, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted March 31, 2009 Go to "My Controls" in the upper right corner (next to "view new posts" - a very handy feature). You'll find an option for changing your display name. Thank you and welcome.
