Low mode for ARRI 435

Greetings One and All,

Could anyone please enlighten me with present technique of supporting the ARRI 435 camera in Low Mode? Is it done with brackets or cage? I believe that this camera is flown quite often.

Any pictures of the brackets or cage would be great. What would be the best alternative if the worst case scenario is that there is no Steadi-mags available but the normal magazines?

Any help and suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Happy flying

In most cases if you tell the rental house you are going to do steadicam they will provide (at an additional cost) the 100% video top. It's a video tap that goes on in place of the cameras normal optic block and has a built in plate to attach steadicam plate to.

If that's not available, there is also a Hill bracket you can rent or buy.

If there are no steadi mags then the low mode bracket is irrelivent. If that's the case just fly the camera upside down and let them flip the image in post.

Hi! Mike,

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I don't have such good luck. Maybe a Hill bracket might be the answer. Any pictures of it in action? As of now, I am not brave enough to suggest flipping in post yet. Maybe on the day of shoot or when I run out of of options and help from you guys.

Thanks again.

Hi Mike

If you use a Jerry Hill Low Mode, you have to use Steadicam mag.

435 normal magazines will touch the bracket and you can`t set the sled in low mode.

Best to all,

Gus

yes hill bracket needs steadimag ,but i thing cage also need steadimags for working,as for the choice

absolutely the bracket !!!!! 100% video top is the best option(lighter camera and perfectly balanced, also need steadymags or at least verical magazines) but rental house charge it extra and camera assitands will hate you every time they change the viewfinder with vide top (its not only the work ,if they do it wrong they expose the film),also some d.o.p., focus pullers also, wants to check through the viser

in the other hand bracket make the change from high to low so quick (2' work)

fly safe

Hi everybody,

In my area, (China and Hong Kong), there are just a few 435 steadimag can rental (maybe just have two in the whole country...). Then I talked with Markus in Baer-Bel, then he help me to modify a new version of low mode cage which can fit a 435 (with viewfinder and normal magazine) Since I still have no time to test it with a 435, but I think it can do it. Based on the measurement, I can put a 435 on it. haha

Hi Julian

I have CP cage and Baer Bel cage for low mode.

With the CP cage, I worked with 435 normal magazines and viewfinder, and the camera fit ok.

When the AC needs to change magazine, is a little bit dificult, but the camera fit and you can work.

I never tried with the baer Bel cage and 435, but I think when the AC need change the mag, the door can touch the telescopic column at sides. Check it before...

Best to all,

Gus

Dear Cheong,

I use the Hill bracket and it works great. I've know some AC's are not comfortable with flying a film camera upside down. We do it all the time with digital cameras, but get the 1st AC's blessing beforehand.

Regarding Steadicam mags, I think they are essential in you doing your best work. The weight transfer in a regular 400' 435 mag is substantial, especially during long shots. I was on a music video where I knew I would be doing the entire song (3 1/2 minutes) over and over again. Production questioned whether we needed Steadi mags, and I informed them I felt so strongly about it, that I would pass on the job if they didn't rent them. Why fight the headroom throughout a shot when it's not necessary.

Regarding the 100% video, it's really nice to have with a 435 (brighter image), but it's not a deal breaker for me. The Hill bracket accommodates both video setups, and the additional weight of the regular video tap is not a big deal. Some rental houses just don't have the 100% tap, so the Hill bracket will save you in those cases.

Hi Mark,

I also hoping the production people will ask me, "do you need a steadi mag?"....haha

I also have the Jerry Hill bracket at home, but never have chance to use it...In HK and China, I just heard that there are only two pieces of 435 steadi mag....and these two pieces are long-term rental out in northern China. So the producer always will ask, "We cannot find out any 435 steadi mag, can you fly with normal mag?"

It seems is a bad news, in China and Hong Kong area, all directors want steadicam all the time, but no any producers think steadicam is important because it is too expensive to get all the "right" steadicam equipments together.... and China people are very cheap, they can receive under USD$300 a day to do steadicam...of course those guys are just normal cameraman and looks "bigger in shape". The results are sucks normally... but in China, over 95% of the people don't know what is good steadicam

I also wanna to find the vertical mag....haha...but the answer from rental house is, "oh, sorry, we don't have....." I just can get a so called "steadimag" for 535B from rental house...(as seen in the first photo I attached) The rental house called it is a steadimag.

This mag is very light in weight, just about half weight as the normal mag (the second photo)

HK's and China's rental houses have many normal cameras and mags....but the accessories and special mags are hard to find out @_@...

Hi! Guys,

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I guess the suggestion of the Hill's bracket would be the way to go. My sincere thanks again.

Fly safe
