Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted January 18, 2004 Moderators Report Share Posted January 18, 2004 Adam, Mine is an older one designed to interface with an EFP junction box. Not owning an EFP, I use a jumper cable for all lenses. Thanks though.

Premium Members AdamKeith Posted January 18, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 18, 2004 BarTech Utility Zoom (BUZ) The BarTech Utility Zoom is a wired zoom control model currently under development. It will work with any motor, not just zoom motors like other units. It will feature interchangeable control modules that allow the user to customize the unit for their preference. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I thought that Jim's zoom control was wireless. I copied the above info off his web site. Sorry for the mis-information....but it still sounds good. Adam Keith
Premium Members JobScholtze Posted January 18, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 18, 2004 Peter, Must say that i use a j-7 sometimes during a multiple camera job, but i prefer using a focus puller. When we do crane shots in the Netherlands we also use 2 cameraman. 1 for zoom focus and 1 for the camera head. I always work with the same puller and it works great. When doing fast runs it's very easy for me to go super closeup with him behind the remote, and also an extra assistant during breaks. Why do everything yourself and helping production to save a few bucks extra? Just my 2 cents
Premium Members Peter Abraham Posted January 19, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 19, 2004 ..........your two cents is worth as much as anyone's !! As for Adam's thingy about the jumpers, it is true now. They are pre-wired, and you buy a jumper to cross over flavors. My first two J-7's were made for EFP's and required jumper cables for both flavors. In fact, out of sheer need to be flexible, I ordered one wired that way recently, and paid Fred Davis to make me jumpers to the old wiring specs. I know. I'm weird as well as wired. Sorry for the mis-information....but it still sounds good. Adam Keith Thanks for clearing that up Adam. BUZ UPDATE: I've been using the slow months of December/January to work on the BUZ (BarTech Universal Zoom) and have made major progress. The Prototype PC boards arrived on Friday and I will be building and testing this week and next. I still have some software to write but it is pretty simple and I can write very quickly (the BFD only took a week and it is much more complex). I hope to have a field test prototype by the end of this month. At this point I am concentrating on the electronics and will develop the control after. Since the unit is designed to be compatible with the J-7, initial field testing will be limited to J-7 owners (original 6-pin Hirose EFP version), or to people who can beg, borrow or steal one. Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted January 21, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 21, 2004 One major down fall with the Stanton is the fact that you have to use his "motors" that are basically just RF Car remote motors with shrink wrap put together... A friend of mine has a drawer full of them that just stopped working...
kes
Does anyone know anything about the Bebop Zoe II zoom control ? I am considering buying it as it is relatively cheap, about 500 USD. I do not know how much the J-7 cost but I assume around 2000 USD (?). If anyone had some bad experiense with the Bebop and should think I better invest the extra cash on the J-7 I guess I could do that, but I would really would want to hear comments on the Bebops's Zoe. Thanks Kes
Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted January 21, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 21, 2004 Does anyone know anything about the Bebop Zoe II zoom control ? I used one a little bit on a non steadicam job. It's small and easy to use and seemed to work well. I can't comment too much about the performance because I didn't get to use it much. For the price it seems like a pretty good deal for video jobs.

I spoke to Frank Rush at Tiffen yesterday and he quoted $550 as list for the J-7. Jim "price fixer" Bartell
kes
I thought the J-7 would cost so much more than 550 USD. Now I really start thinking I should go for the J-7 and not for the Bebob if the price is nearly identical. Kes
Premium Members Bryan Trieb Posted January 23, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 23, 2004 Kes.........go for the J-7!!! At $550 USD you can't go wrong...seriously! I paid much more than that here in Toronto because I had to go through the Canadian dealer....and I'm sure the price was cushioned with some profit......but still for video shoots it's worth every penny. It should come with 2 seperate cables...for Canon and Fuji lenses. Best of luck! Bryan Trieb
Premium Members AdamKeith Posted January 24, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 24, 2004 Erwin, I own two Stanton Jibs. One is 10 years old. I never had any trouble with the focus motors. I grant you its not the best motor out but I think the Stanton Steadicam Zoom/Focus System is well worth the money for Steadicam Ops starting out looking for Zoom and Focus for Video lens. Stanton also has excellent Customer Support. Jim Bartell adapted my BFD to work with the Stanton Motor so I can use his System with my Jibs and Steadicam. Stanton has a newer motor out "Stanton Right Angle Motor" that is a little beefier than the old style. Adam Keith

One client bought 4 for use on "The Italian Job" and swore by them. At $595 it is well worth the money. The biggest drawback is it is too noisy for sound use but works just fine on jib's, etc., where noise isn't an issue. Also the modification prevents the BFD from being used with other motors.
