550 miles Round Trip

6.5 Hours of Driving

13 hours out of the house

6.5 hours at the show.

Anton Bauer shows the Dionic HC now rated at 91W/H (The press release had it at 85 W/H) Slightly larger than the Dionic 90/Hyton 50 form factor. Different display. LIGHTER than the Dionic 90. Needs new ID chip in the chargers other than that it acts just like you are used to. Then Paul Dudeck (The hero of steadicam power) says "Wanna see something cool?" Well DUH! He shows me a engineering concept and test article of a battery that will charge in 30 mins. YUP 1/2 HOUR. right now capacity is 60 w/h and it is larger than a hytron 160. He thinks that in a year when it's released it will be smaller with a higher capacity. Paul then mentions it will need it's own special charger. I wonder if the "Mr. Fusion" that you will need to run the charger will be included.

Arri shows the HD IVS.... The good news, really nice Tap. The bad news HD only. Seems the power supply for the tap is in the camera body and can only supply 24 watts, the tap draws 21. A downconverter would run that draw up to 30+ watts, my response was simple, "SO?" I met with the gentleman that designed the tap and suggested that the lack of a down converter was a massive oversight and that he "Screwed every steadicam operator on the planet" (opps I forgot to keep that internal monologue internal) to which he responded "I did not consider that". Really?? now we need downconverters or to urge the rental houses to provide then (The Redbyte Decimator would fit this bill nicely)

Arri's almost tragically named WCU-3 (They almost named it WRC-3) Remote focus control is nice, very nice. The only problem I see with it is that it is Arri specific, For instance, MDR power is a hardwired camera run cable. Nice way to limit your market

Arri also showed a 16mm Rectilinear master prime and a 150mm master prime (Huge and gorgeous) and a 100mm Master Macro with a 1:1 ratio

Tiffen. WOW in the last five years they have made HUGE strides in gear. The Ultra2c the "C" is for configurable. Base price is a massive $16,000 less than the Ultra2. Think of it as Build a Bear does steadicam. Option it up to a full U2 or not. Now it's up to you.

The Archer 2. Really cool midweight rig. Looks to be a great running rig. New G40 arm. This arm lacks ride control.

The big news at Tiffen though is their new OLED 7" monitor. No such thing as viewing angle. It's ALWAYS viewable. The contrast is amazing and the power consumption is stupid low. Less than .2 amps with a fully white screen and in the milliamp range when black. SD for now but they are building it to be SD and HD when released, this is going to be great.

Transvideo showed a really nice HD transmitter with zero latency. The transmitter is less than 2lbs range is 200 ft with no errors. Price $10,000+

Glidecam has a 2" center post as an option. WHY???

The amount of steadicam knockoffs amazes you. some are interesting most are just horrific. The french one that uses rubber bands looks like it was built in a high school sheet metal class, that or the AC duct guy has a side job. Actioncam just looks wrong, I've never seen so many rubber o-rings in one place. When I went to spin the gimbal handle it didn't. It felt like the shaft was bent. Not a little bent but a lot bent. Nice way to sell your gear.

California Sun Bounce introduced the Steadicam Wind Tamer in small, medium and large. (Large is actually gigantic) it's a Black fabric honeycomb, very nice. The Med one runs $350 and is availble at Samys camera. I'm buying one

Sony has a new HD production camera the SRW-9000 It's a F23 and SRW1 recorder in a single camcorder. they claim 17lbs for the body and 65 watts power consumption, for some reason I don't believe those numbers. I will say this though. It's is the ugliest camera I've seen in a long time. It truly looks like the box the camera was shipped in.

Band Pro was showing s.Two's OB-1 and flashmag onboard 4:4:4 recorder. 6 lbs and it mounts on the F23/F35/Genocide. Looks very nice, I'm looking forward to trying it on "Dexter" next month.

There is a slew of compact flash HD recorders at the show. I had another internal Monologue moment at the Mikrom booth. I got to see the "microStorage" that was posted about in the last few days. at first blush it looks nice, then I was told the price.... $8800 "Are you out of you mind?!?!" Time to leave that booth...

Then I looked at the Convergent design nanoFlash (What is with the new style of capitalization, seriously) Now at their booth I was told $3249 show special $3999 normal price. But when I saw it at Bandpro (I think that was it) Michael Bravin told me it was $1500. What gives?

MK-V.... Yes they have a "Booth" it's 3 feet deep x 8 feet long. Nothing new on display. I'll leave it at that....

I'm sure I forgot something, I'll let Erwin and the others at the show fill in the blanks. I'm off to bed I have an early call tomorrow and it's been a long day.

Sorry Eric, i wish i had that numbers to visit NAB.. In my case more like 13 hours flight, 1 day show, lack of sleep and 13 hours back home

But.. thanks for this nice, super fast overview of the show..

Best, Erik

So, no new OMEGA system at mk-v? Or das the omega means a new sticker on something.

Nothing new of note. He was showing his "New Arm" and If I were Hugo I'd be mighty pissed since it's a direct copy of his IIIa based arm. But what he did have on stand looked very, very used

Eric,

Was the Boxx HD transmitter there?

Hi Alec,

Yes, Boxx has two booths actually. The system is very close to shipping. Unfortunately the transmitter has increased in size somewhat, it's still smaller than the Camwave but not nearly as compact as it once was (say, closer to a Canatrans). It's still under a pound, I would say. The two tall antennas are currently fixed but Scott tells us that it will be possible to remove them soon (within 3 months) and any units purchased will be made backward compatible with this mod. There will be stubby antennas available which will maintain the range but increase the possibility of interference (the tall ones have 3 separate elements, like a diversity system, which would be reduced to 1 in the stubby version). The unit has membrane type buttons and a display readout which is pretty nice.

Sadly it's still a bit of a work in progress but it is getting there.

Thanks Charles. We have the Camwave Wevi on this RED job I'm doing now. Just started today, but first impressions are that it is big, heavy, and not gifted with great mounting points, but its a step. Very interested in the Boxx and I suppose the Transvideo, but the price seems a deal breaker.

Does anyone have anymore information or detail about this monitor?

Tried the French rig (Eagle) with the rubber band arm and "take your blood pressure" pump up vest. Very funky system and very blue in color for whatever reason. Not sure its gonna last in any way shape or form.

Glidecam Gold=junk

Also tried the Action Cam, not that great. (I didn't bend the gimbal handle)

Sachtler was on the right path I think.

I'm sticking with Tiffen after these other companies scared the hell out of me.

The Archer 2 was a great rig with the RED camera they had on it. Despite concerns about the arm capacity, this could be an easier rig for new ops to get into price wise.

aloha eric

thanks for that, what a great overview

by the way did you have a look at the transvideo hd monitor by chance

supposedly its around 1000 nit

Yes it's very nice. It's a downsampled HD Image (Not pixel for pixel) and presented on a 4x3 monitor. The bottom non-live area is used for waveform and vector scope display.

But it is bright...
