Premium Members Michael Wilson Posted May 4, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2009 (edited) Hey everybody, This was my first job as an operator. It was shot on the RED with the Actioncam RED edition. Andrew Palermo, the director, and friends built the ring that band is inside and had four friends dressed in black powering it like a merry go round running around it. I was running the with and against the ring as it was spinning. Andrew's inspiration for this video was to create a zoetrope effect. The director didn't want to shoot any wider than 50mm. So we mostly used 50mm and 100mm lenses. Which was frightening for me when he told me. It took two long fun days to complete the shooting. Their are some cool crane shots too. Thanks for checking it out. Watch it in full screen. white rabbits - percussion gun Michael Wilson Edited May 4, 2009 by Michael Wilson
Ken Underwood
First of all nice work on the moves. It was all butter. Second of all I love the way the RED looks. Amazing.
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted May 4, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2009 Clever concept and a cool clip. The effect wore on me and was no longer welcome by the last 1/3 (kind of wish that during the breakdown the camera had gone inside, more intimate shots with less foreground movement, to give the viewer a break) but that's a directing choice. That's not an easy first gig! congrats. Your focus puller did a good job too.

I tracked along and waited for the opening and went through the ring during the breakdown and out again when the opening came around the other end. Didn't quite work out though. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted May 4, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2009 Interesting. I would have thought that it would have just been easier to pick up that section separately rather than have to try to make it a dynamic move (it's cut too quick to appreciate that anyway). Especially in a two day shoot at a single location.

Premium Members David George Ellis Posted May 12, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 12, 2009 Good job, Michael. Would have liked to see more of your work in a not so chopped and screwed manner, but I guess that's the music video in this ADHD Generation. That and, having to cut around the men running the carousel in post. I agree with Charles in regards to the "zoetrope" effect comment. I thought they were used to create the illusion of movement, not make my left eye hurt. It seemed to be a little tight to get in there and really let your wings spread. Too bad. I would have rather seen what you got, as well as some inside shots of the band with the lights moving in the background, not just moving light support beams with the band in the background. But hey, that's just me being a Monday morning quarterback. It's all relative and doesn't take away from your good work.
