Heden M28VP servicing.

It could all be in my head but I feel like my follow focus motor is noisier than it used to be. I did a shoot recently where I spent a good amount of time in wet environments and where the AC would go past the end stops on the lens when calibrating on a regular basis so one or both of these things could have something to do with it. I plan on opening it up and poking around inside but would like to get some advice on oiling, adjustments, etc... Anyone know anything about the subject?

I have service this kind of motor twice ,both times the problem was the potentiometer (I've done on "p" model ,but vp is with pot.too).

It's a tricky business,but not so hard to do .You will need very small Allan key I believe was .9 0r .75 mm ,than a 9mm long key(latherman will work too)

Unfortunately the pot. is a bit expensive(will be more than 250usd in US) and hard to find.Here is the model: Vishay Spectrol ; mod. 162-11103 ;res 10k +/-5% ;lin +/- .3%

Was yours getting noisy like mine or did it have other problems? Mine is actually still under warranty so Magnus at Heden said he would take care of it for me same day the only problem is the shipping to Sweden.

If it still under warranty just send it.

It is not only the noise,it will start shaking and some big "black holes " in some positions.

The two I have repaired are not mine,but one of mine is going there(I have 32's)

I will look in my equipment for something made around Galapagos islands or the big barrier reef :P

I had a motor serviced with Magnus in the past, UPS or Fedex are good options, it takes about 7 to 10 days in all.

 

I have one of their new digital Motors (Preston compatible) and I love it for it's size and weight.

This is quite interesting, does this mean that as the pot is limited to 10 turns, the motor is also limited to 10 turns?

My Heden M28VP stopped working today after my assistant connected an old Aaton power cable, which was part of the kid, instead of the actual FOX analog motor cables.

Didn't even notice they had similar connections and that it might be possible to put the 4 pin hirose for power into the motor port.

 

On the Heden site I found out they stopped service for the M28VP in 2016 so I'm a little concerned ( http://heden.se/support/service/ ). Maybe they would repair it anyway but I'll have to wait until monday to find out. Is there another place where I might have it repaired?

 

Meanwhile I had a thought. Maybe there is a safety braker inside the motor which might just gave out due to current on the wrong lines. There was no actual blue smoke or something and also I can't imagine that it's possible to actually kill the internal motor or potentiometer just by wrong electronic connections. The motor would just turn to the opposite direction for reverse polarity, wouldn't it? Possibly destroying the potentiometer mechanically as it hits the end of the 10 turns. But there was no movement at all when he plugged in that cable. It just stopped working. Backup M26P motor still worked with the FOX so it's not the output driver.
