The Great Daylight Monitor Shootout

Marianne's comments aside about the Marshall monitors, this monitor will be had for around 2 grand (from the usual suspects) with increased pixel count (over the Marshall monitor I referenced) looks like great value in that price range.

this monitor did not have the issues the others did. On their site it's around $2300 with an ab mount. Guessing it might require a trip to the machine shop to put it on a rig? I can't wait to see the comparison pics.

Regarding those pix, sorry guys, I've been having trouble getting them from the photographer. Soon I hope.

re: Ron's question--RED has overscan, my brain is telling me that the F23/35 does not (when in 16:9 mode...shooting 2:35 gives you some top and bottom room to play). D21 does if you use the videotap output but is otherwise full frame.

Gee, I sure hope I remembered those correctly...

Charles,

do you remember if the Transvideo HD6 has a better viewing angle from above or below?

I missed the event because of work but I wanted to say that my Transvideo monitors are very reliable and perform very well in sunlight. I would rather pay more for a monitor to have the reliability and features. I've used other brands (not mentioning names) that ended up costing more when you factor in repairs over the years. I have never had any issues or problems with Transvideo monitors even in the extreme conditions I have put them thru. During 8 seasons of the Amazing Race I hauled them to over 90 countries as they got beat up by airline luggage handlers, using them in sub zero snowy conditions as well as 120 degree heat in the desert, rainy monsoons and high humidity, and they have not failed me once. That says a lot about the quality of manufacture and I would gladly pay more for a product that is well made and has all the features. There is a reason it is more expensive. I have the piece of mind knowing that it is not likely to fail in the field.

I am sure there are other brands that also hold up well, but i'm only speaking from my personal experience with Transvideo.

If you are shopping for cars and buy a Ford Focus, yes it gets the job done and its cheap, but you have to roll down the windows manually, you don't look as cool driving it so you might not get as many girls, and they break down more often so you might pay a few thousand extra in repairs over the years. You should have bought the more expensive Honda Accord with cruise control and power windows, and it lasts twice as long with very few repairs. I've got over 280k miles on mine after 14 years. I couldn't afford a new car because I spent all my money on Steadicam monitors ;)

nobody doubts the quality and service of transvideo, but this particular comparison wasn't billed "the great LCD monitor with lots of features shootout". Of course being packed full of features and having a reputable company with great customer service gives it an edge over the others, but in reality it wasn't any easier to see in the direct sunlight than several other monitors of lesser cost (and with fewer features).

maybe a better comparison would be between the Ford Focus and the Acura TL instead of the Accord, as the Acura costs twice as much as the Ford.

That being said, I'd be very happy to have one (a TL and a transvideo 6" HD).

The Transvideo was a great monitor and I also would love to have one. That being said I was somewhat disappointed to see that it didn't perform quite as well in direct sunlight as some of the other monitors there such as the less expensive Marshall and Nebtek monitors. That being said if the prices were closer I would still probably go for the Transvideo because of the much more professional build quality and extra features that are available. If it performed as well I would go for the Transvideo in an instant, but seeing as how the Marshall and Nebtek had a slight edge in viewability and were significantly cheaper they seem like very appealing options to me.

All that being said the difference in daylight viewability between most of the LCD monitors was very minor. Going in to the whole thing I was kind of hoping for a monitor that would be a clear winner but it doesn't seem to exist as of yet. Which monitor an operator picks is really going to depend on what you hope to get out of it.

Marianne- Any plans on updating your monitor to get even better daylight viewability? Either making it transflective(like the Marshall or I think the Hummingbird) or uping the brightness of the backlight? Or anything else that works for that matter.

Stupid question perhaps, but did you had the settings correct? There is a knob to set it up to user, or full bright

It was full bright and setup, Marianne was making sure of that every ten minutes. While I think the transvideo is nice monitor it still suffers from off axis viewing issues and has "Features" that do not appeal to me, Also it being a 4x3 panel makes it larger than it needs to be since it's been 4 years since I shot anything 4x3.

For the money, the Nebtek was everybit as good or better than the transvideo, in fact it was brighter and had less off axis viewing issues. Additionally it is a native 16x9 panel so the enclosure is a smaller more manageable size. Nebtek is also very open to our needs, I made a suggesting to them last night and they are going to incorporate it on the monitors starting next week! AND it's less than half the price of the Transvideo. Nebtek is also the supplier to PRO-GPI for HD monitors on the new HD Sled.

The Nebtek monitor will also be available with adjustable framelines, pro compatible mount and lemo connector for analog video input and power. Nebtek is very responsive to our needs so far.

that's good news Eric and Jens. I hope they can center the batt mount as well.

Hi Guys,

I'll keep on paying my money to the innovators that dream up new ways of making our lives easier, and not to the manufacturers that play catch-up and benefit from R+D they never invested in. Apart from being a question of principle, it's just plain good sense. The products that Transvideo has in the pipeline are way beyond what we have available to us now, and if that's due to a little extra investment from me, I'm proud of it.

This goes for all my Steadicam gear, from Tiffen to Handsfree-Transporter. Hail to the innovators!

My 200,000 cents!

Chris

I agree with you in part, but if it wasn't for the one's "playing catch up" nothing would ever get any better, at least not by the leaps and bounds we've seen in the last 15 years. Perhaps Tiffen would be still be selling 3A's if George never released the pro sled (yes I'm being facetious).
