Premium Members Tom Upton Posted June 4, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 4, 2009 I recieved an email from Blackmagic that they have finally introduced a software upgrade to one of their units to now do HD SDI to Standard Def. It seems bigger than the Decimator and has other stuff that we don't need such as audio jacks, but it it at least worth looking at. Blackmagic does have a good reputation ( at least what I've heard from some editors/techs.) They want $495 which is higher than the Decimator. If I get a demo model, I'll give a report. In the meantime you can check it out at http://www.blackmagic-design.com
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted June 5, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 5, 2009 I had been keeping my eye on Blackmagic, thinking they would be adding a downconverter to their mini-converter line for a long time (had emailed them about this a while back, no response). Then the Decimator came along. It's bad timing for Blackmagic, because had they done this upgrade earlier, I think we would have all jumped on that unit. Bit hard to justify now that it is more expensive and larger. That said, I just realized I already own the particular box (SDI to analog) that is now upgradeable to a downconverter! I use it on my 17" HD CRT monitor that has component inputs so that I can accept HD-SDI. After I do the upgrade I'll do a comparison and let you guys know what I think.
