Premium Members Brian Freesh Posted June 9, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 ::raises hand:: I'm that someone who pointed out Flyers CAN take an F900. I'd have to examine the thread, but I hope I didn't imply they SHOULD. I generally am the guy that will be the devil's advocate. I'm always willing to look at something from a different point of view. That said, everything everyone has said here is total truth. However, there's certainly something to be recognized in a low budget production's willingness, heck, eagerness, to do something with as little luxury as possible. I had to teach a 1st AC of 6 years how to use a Bartech last year because he had never once used a wireless focus device. No, that wasn't in LA! He's simply in a film community that has always managed to find a way around it. I know people that work with what I consider to almost be limitations, but to them that's simply the way to do it. So every production they do is like that, and they keep getting work. So no worry of someone asking for more. So you know what, maybe if these productions understand the limitations of your rig, and of their budget to get things that would weigh it down, you can go into both gigs with no fear of having more expected of you. Now, that being said... On the same production that I taught the AC to use a Bartech, I was told I would not only never be tethered to sound, but that I wouldn't even be recording sound. All my shots were MOS. Turned out only a few reaction shots were not Steadicam, I was recording audio for every shot, and I was tethered. So don't always believe what they tell you! Best person to talk to about recording sound for the shoot is the production sound mixer by the way! Frankly, my biggest concern would be your rig's survival. It's most likely you will end up maxing out your rig for the entire shoot, for both shoots. As we discussed in that other thread, your arm can handle more weight than your rig is officially rated for. But if you max it out every day for a month, what's gonna happen to the gimbal, or the post for that matter? You'll be putting a lot of stress on your gear, are you sure you want to? about a month ago I successfully put an Arricam LT with a prime lens, 400' steadimag (with 400' load), bartech, and a clip on mattebox. I could have put a cinetape as well, and a wireless transmitter. With a superspeed it balanced and the arm did not sag. With an S4 it balanced but the arm sagged. It's nice to know I CAN do that, but I wouldn't WANT to do it pretty much for any shoot ever. Not that I think I'm gonna be offered anyway. For what it's worth, it flew beautifully. I say get a bigger rig for both shoots, personally, if only for the sake of your gear. But I've less experience I believe than anyone else who has replied. Just offering another perspective. Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted June 9, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 As long as we are posting photo's of F900 rigs. Here's a rig I flew on a series a few years ago, 47" long, and 86lbs all up. No way in hell would that fly on a flyer.....
Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted June 9, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 Hey Robert, are you also powering the lights on the overhang with those 4 IDX's !?! Hey Alfeo, actually yes I was except I kept blowing a fuse on my rig when we tried to run the espresso maker and the lights at the same time B) B) B) Frankly I didn't think I'd ever get it to all balance out but the stackable IDX's really helped. Premium Members Mike Germond SOC Posted June 9, 2009 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 I've started looking into expanding beyond my IDX PowerCubes, and stackable looks like a promising option. What model are you using Robert? Speaking of which, has anyone ever heard of this brand or been contacted by them? http://www.nossantech.com/
Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted June 10, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 10, 2009 I've started looking into expanding beyond my IDX PowerCubes, and stackable looks like a promising option Hi Mike, I have a mix of six PowerCubes and eight IDX Endura 10 stackables. It's the same as a PowerCube without all the "PowerCube Magic Mojo" inside; same power, same everything except the PowerCube mojo for cameras with a high current requirement. Sometimes being able to stack the batteries is useful but I don't think I've ever had to use four like that package above. A note of caution / confusion when ordering is to make sure you get the IDX Endura 10 if you want stacking, not the IDX Endura 10s which is flat like a PowerCube. It's really easy to order some IDX 10's verbally as in plural quantity and get the wrong item. Been there done that. Back to the thread topic before I get on yet another tangent. PM me if you want more info. Robert
